I love Soundgarden, whether it's Ultramega OK or it's Down On The Upside. What bands can you recommend? I was thinking of Alice in Chains, but which album(s) to get?
    7 Year Bitch
    Babes in Toyland
    Coffin Break
    Gruntruck
    Pond
    Tad

That should get you started on grunge.

First three albums are great. Songs For The Deaf is the best, although don't ignore Rated R and self-titled.

Their self-titled first album is their essential one. I don't think Second Coming really compares to it, but it's definitely worth a few listens.

Honestly, you can't really go wrong with any of their albums. Dinosaur Jr. is one of the most consistent bands out there. You might want to check out their new album, Farm (which was literally just released yesterday, though it's been floating around cyberspace for a while) or one of their more "classic" albums like Bug or You're Living All Over Me. Bug is my personal favorite.

Ooh, shoegaze, my specialty. I'll try not to overwhelm, but here goes anyway. These are in a rough order of how essential they are, but definitely try to check each and every one of these out eventually.

    Ride - Nowhere
    Slowdive - Souvlaki
    Lush - Spooky
    Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies
    Swervedriver - Mezcal Head
    Chapterhouse - Whirlpool
    Pale Saints - In Ribbons
    Catherine Wheel - Ferment
    Galaxie 500 - On Fire
Kitchens of Distinction - Strange Free World
    Brian Jonestown Massacre - Methodrone
    Fleeting Joys - Occult Radiance

I think that should be plenty of bands to start out with. Nothing ultra-obscure, but definitely worth checking out.

    is Filter any good?
if so, what are some things to get into?

Yeah,Filter is pretty decent. Listen to "Hey Man,Nice Shot"(their most popular song). If you've already heard that then I'd say check out some of the songs from their greatest hits album, that should get you started.

i never really got into filter, but i believe most fans pretty much stuck with "short bus" (which had hey man, nice shot on it).
