Heya Kev, you can get gold stars if everyone in the band is playing on expert.
Something like if you get a score that is 1.5x the 5 star score, it hits the gold star cutoff and your 'rating' on that song shows up as 5 gold stars, instead of the 'regular' 5 stars.

And I don't recall you doing that bad on Peace of Mind... nothing that overdrive deployment couldn't overcome.
That disconnect that happened with you and I though right at the end of the night... do you know if that was your connection or mine?
It actually timed out pretty well anyways, as I was starting to go cross-eyed looking at note charts... but I'm always paranoid if it's my connection that drops out.

Hey Pub, I think that was your connection, if you guys want to get an easy 5 gold stars we need to play, so whatcha want. That is easy to play on expert.

Kev, thanks for helping me work on some of those Band Challenges. I'm at the point where I need to have some folks help me finish the band ones out. On the gold stars thing, PK described it if you meant for songs, but if you mean for your band to have a gold star rating, I'm not exactly positive how that works. I guess there is some kind of point scale involved, but it seems if nothing else the last song you did has to have been gold-starred if you are past that threshold. So I fluctuate on my band rating a lot, like if I miss a particular song or have other folks play with me that are not on expert or whatever. If that happens I see that I lose my gold-star rating on the band, but usually I just need to do one more song that I do gold-star and it comes back. So I'm not exactly certain how it works.

So far there are 3 songs that I haven't gold-starred yet, Spoonman (just enough oddball, improvisational vocalizations in it that it's really hard to memorize his pitch in those sections), Rob the Prez-O-Dent and Tangled Up In Blue, those last two being because the singer in the song is not at all on pitch with what RB2 apparently wants you to sing and I need to figure out what it is RB2 is expecting. I figured it out on TUIB once singing with PK (I got 99% and if I had hit ODs in the right spots while soloing I probably would have gold starred it). But I can't seem to stick it back in my head that way again. I know I very deliberately sing something Dylan is NOT singing because it goes all over the place and is just flat far too much to ever get it right if you emulate him. Very, very annoying. I will conquer those songs someday!

As for easy to GS on vocals, any of the "Talkies" (including Visions) is a piece of cake to gold star. Just make noise in the mic and kick off OD based on that Score Hero thread I posted earlier, and there you go. You don't have to be able to sing or anything.

Meanwhile, I'm taking a break for a bit and probably for dinner as well, but I do plan to get back on this evening and I can even play late tonights since I have off tomorrow. :) I would appreciate anyone willing to help me do those last sets for the Band challenges, though, if anyone is willing.

Zarlor, I'll try to come on tonight and help with the challenges. I know his is a lot to ask and probably a impossible request, it would be cool if we all scheduled a time like half a saturday to do the endlist set list as a band. I wonder if you get some special icon. I would be willing to do that. We could start at noon or 1 on a Saturday. That would be cool to do a ESL with 4 people, but the odds would be stacked against us, just having the internet connection stay constant for 6hrs would be a challenge enough.
  • zarlorzarlor Opening Act
    edited February 2009
You do get a special icon. You can't play it at easy. bit at medium you get a reversed icon of the instrument you used (so instead of a white outline on a black background, it's a black outline on a white background) if you finish it on hard you get a gold icon and on expert you get a platinum icon (you probably just didn't notice that my microphone icon is platinum the last time we played, but if you look at it the next time we are together that's the one you get for completing it on Expert, PK's drum icon is gold because he finished his on hard. Just take a look the next time you play with either of us.)

As for ESL online... I can't even see it being doable. Since it's not a challenge you can't just pause the set to take a break or anything in the online mode like you can offline, and of course having any kind of consistent connection for that long is probably impossible, more so the more folks you have coming in from different connections. Trust me, so it solo or with a local band instead. You'd get nothing special by doing it with a full band online anyway.

Actually, now that I think about it, there is one way to take breaks. If you fail a song it drops everyone to a window where it asks if you want to retry. So I suppose that might be a way to do it. I don't see how you'd be able to get anyone back in who disconnected, though, and any songs you play after they disco will simply not play their instrument, so you'll never hear it playing for the rest of the set.

I really strongly recommend not doing the esl2 online.
As an example, my connection is rock solid, but Kev we still had a disconnect when we played.
It's not like a tour challenge... where you can quit and save your progress.

There are just too many variables with an online connection, and different peoples lives that could effect things over a length of time like that.

I didn't see you on tonight, Kev, but that's OK, I recruited PubKnight and then soundly picked the final "Impossible Band Challenge" and sent him through the gruelling marathon of some of the hardest songs in the game! (Painkiller, Battery, and Ace of Spades among them.)

Sorry about that, but thanks a million for helping me finish that final band challenge!

(I think he really hates me now, though...)

    I don't hate you.
I'm frustrated because playing those songs with a broken bass pedal is like playing major league baseball with a nerf bat... i.e. I will do my double bass kick... but part of the pedal just doesn't move.... that makes something like Painkiller tougher than it needs to be.
Was also frustrated because I literally had logged in all of 20 seconds before you invited me... so a warm up song or two would have been nice.
And finally, I was frustrated because Ace of Spades pisses me the hell off.
I don't know wtf it is with that damned song.

After I get my new pedal, I insist on redoing that challenge.

I really had no idea you had only been on that long. I had been doing a bunch of solo stuff and realized that it was starting to get a little late and nobdoby had sent me an invite in hours. So I figured I would check and see if anyone else was actually on but possibly just doing some other solo stuff like I was. I really though maybe you had been working on that drum battle that was added today or something like that. I really am sorry. Maybe next time if you see a setlist like that (or if I do and need a warmup or something) we could swap up to easy on the difficulty selection, not to choose it, but to say "Back it up and pick something else first."

ok, that's a good signal.... that makes sense.
I'll choose easy if something gets picked that I don't feel I'm quite up for at that moment.
What was the drum battle today?
    I didn't even look.
Literally logged in, got your invite, played that challenge... then logged out to come up here an yell at you via email and to check my usps tracking number for my bass pedal =)

Hey Zarlor, I sent you about 5-6 invites last night, you never got them? I also sent GX3 some, he sent me ones too but for some reason I can't join his sessions.

Yeah, PK, that's about what I imagined happened. The battle is called Winter Drummer and is for solo drums. The set consistes of White Wedding & A Jagged Gorgeous Winter.

And Kev, I never saw your invites at all and they weren't in my invites messages, but I think you had logged off by the time I checked that so they probably go away when that happens. Maybe I was so focused on what I was doing that I just never noticed them. Sorry about that. GX3/megatron seems to often get a full band going or sometimes it's his kids on, so he won't answer invites nearly as much. He's mentioned on this thread before to just keep sending them at occasional intervals and if he's available he may get to them eventually. You know how it goes.

I don't get why it takes them so long.... I'm hoping it's something other than stuff from the 70's. I like that stuff but I'm ready for some newer songs. I could take some No Doubt.

    I'm hoping for Foo Fighters.
No Doubt would be interesting to shake things up a bit.

Jagged Gorgeous Winter in a challenge?
Ugh. That's not an auto-5 star. White Wedding is close to a 6 star if they do it by star count rating... but we'll have to see.
I may not get the chance to fire up the Wii until tomorrow... how long does the challenge run for, do you know off hand?

OH! Exciting News! Pedal update. (ok... well... exciting for me).
My pedal left Florida at 11:44pm on the 14th.
Of course, it doesn't tell me how it left Florida (truck, plane, dolphin), but at least its on its way. Today is a holiday here with no mail service... so I'm hoping for it to arrive tomorrow.

I think Mega (GX3) tends to invite, then drop his session, looking for an invite back if you are interested.
More and more people seem to be doing that, because no one wants to pick the songs... but the problem is, if everyone keeps doing that, there is never a session to actually join.

Oh, and Z, I figured out what that other gold star was with Lockheed the other day: Live Forever by Oasis, and I Was Wrong by Social Distortion.

Sorry for freakin blogging in this thread, but how many people do you all have in your friends lists?

I got caught up a bit in some of the craziness of the Rock Band Wii Discussion thread (which has more or less evolved into a chatroom), and added a whack of people that I have yet to ever play a single session with.
I'm thinking I should favour the smaller "quality" friends list over the larger "quantity" friends list... and maybe do a purge of my pendings, and people I have never played with.

Do you all have a method at all for your friends lists?

I did the same thing, when I first got RB2, I went to the forum and looked at the add me thread. I had a bunch of people as freinds but hardly ever caught up with them online. This group has been the most consistent. So I've removed everyone except for the people in this thread and a few select others.

    .
I got really pissed one time, because I ended a set with 2 other people I didn't know to join a session with GX3, lost 50,000fans, then I try to join and received, session is full or no longer in session. I was pretty irked. Took me awhile to find just 2 more people again.

Yeah, I'm just sending an invite to see who's out there & what's available. Like PK said, I'm not a big fan of picking songs but I also have little kids and things happen where I have to get pulled away. I don't want the session to quit becasue I have to. Plus, I'm usaully playing solo guitar so my spot is easy to fill. I've started to be the leader a little more just because I get quite a few responses when I put out an invite & I've been able to get a full band together fairly quickly lately (see below).

As far as friends go, I probalbly have almost the same friends list from the current info form you do PK (25 or so total) I've played with probably 80% of the people there at one time or another, played with Lily Mu & a few others for the first time yesterday. My schedule is a little crazy so it's nice to have a big pond to fish from. I've found I usually have 4-8 friends on at any given time though who they are varies.

We will be logged in on and off the entire day today...as homework, household chores, and etc dictate. I have today off..YAY.
Brett and I only have you guys as our friends, so a very elite and choice wonderful list I must say!
Hope to jam soon and I have no problem choosing the songs or being the leader since it's usually MY internet connection that fails...don't want to do that to your fan base guys...

Kev, really sorry about that, I wish you would have sent me a PM or something & I would have stopped. So please don't quit a session if you see an invite from me, usually just means I'm available to play if anyones got a spot. I wish there was a better way to communicate, I'd say the % of invites I'm actually able to join is around 10% (either full or session is no longer available).

From now on, I'll stay in a session for a few minutes after I send out an invite. Again, sorry Kev, no hard feelings?

I'll be on and off a bit today as well, but I plan to be on solid this evening. I'm kind of grabbing some information on the DLC songs I have and logging my scores and such so I can see where I need to improve the most, which means I'll be on but I may not respond to invites during the day.

PK, the battle is by score, not stars, no limits on level of play. I didn't see how long it was for but I think there is a place on the RB site that tells you about what battles are currently running and such so you can check them out when not on the game.

As for Friends, pretty much I have just everyone on this thread and my Sister's family (who are NEVER online these days, too many things like Soccer practice and such for her boys). I have probably 3 or 4 of the folks on the thread from early on who are all just pending (I think that includes the guy who originally started this thread!) I think the idea here as been to try and get some folks who don't care about levels and will try their hardest not to drop during a set unless due to a bad connection or it absolutely jsut can't be helped, which is why I also go back to the "matchmaking" screen after pretty much every set so folks can drop if they'd like without worrying about disrupting anything as well as to just see if anyone else is online to invite in. I don't do anything to really manage the list, though.

Candy, good luck on the ESL! I don't even want to think about looking at that monster on drums.

Well, you young whipper-snapper, I been gamin' since the early days with things like Pong and the Atari and Intellivision. I even had a little computer called the Sinclair 2000 that had all of 2K of memory in it that I had to program my own games onto to play anything on it! Did I mention the walking 2 miles to school in the snow, and that it was uphill both ways? (The worst part of it, is that's also true, the last leg of my walk to and from high school were uphill and I lived in Littleton, Colorado at the time which is certainly a lot hillier than here in New Orleans.)

Same as Pub and Kev with the friends list. Added tons of people when I first got the game. I got a notebook full of friend codes, but this group is the one I play with the most. Never got around to really cleaning it up, but figured its nice to have a wide selection of friends to play with. My pending list needs to be gone through. That's for sure!

Hi ryanco64! Can't speak for the others on here, but I've been playing games since the I was at least 6. This is normal for me. My parents don't play either, but I found if you find a game that appeals to them, they are more likely to give it a shot. They wouldn't touch Grand Theft Auto, but get them a pinball game and they won't stop! My mom even likes to play Wii Sports with the grandkids on occassion. It's a riot!

No hard feelings at all, it's a gripe more about the game. I hate how there is no way to communicate other than sending someone a invite message. Did you guys post IM messenger tags? Or did we already go over this? My AIM one is k2e3v80, yahoo messenger is kfrank2380.

I gamed for almost the same ammount of time. I didn't have pong but did have the 2600 when it first came out. That was like the Wii today, adults were buying it for themselves not for kids. I've played coleco but never owned one, had a intellivision, NES, SNES, played Sega at a friends house enough that it was like I owned it. Playstation, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, Now the Wii. I can't imagine how much I've spent on this hobby. It has to be in the 50k range. Now I just have the Wii, I'm still waiting for them to release on VC the greatest football game of all time Tecmo Superbowl for the NES.

What was your favorite games? Rock band is probably the game I've enjoyed the most out of all the systems and games. That's tough to say remembering the sleep overs trying to beat the Legend of Zelda.
