Fantasy All-Star Rock Band, Day 1: Pick Your Favorite Vocalist!

Inspired by the numerous Community RB3 Setlist threads over on the Ultimate Setlist boards, I'd like to start a similar game based around putting together a fantasy all-star rock band.

Using xxxN1GH7M4R3xxx's very successful formula, here are the basics:

Each day, I will "audition" for an existing/historical Vocalist, Lead Guitarist, Bass Guitarist, Drummer or Keyboardist (yes, I said Keyboardist) for the band. During a 24-hour period, forum users can vote on ONE person --- living or dead; from any basically rock-friendly genre (including rock, metal, alt, indie, prog, emo, punk, southern-fried, country, hip-hop, R&B, reggae, etc.) -- to fill that slot. The only limit I'll place is a chronological one: has to be someone from the birth of rock 'n' roll (i.e., the 1950s) onward til today.

Once all 5 positions have been filled, that band will be created, and on Day 6, the community gets to choose a name for that band! Then on Day 7, it begins all over again.....with previous selections blocked out, so that new faces will always appear.

Obviously, there'll be some crossover....i.e., many musicians play multiple roles and can sing, play axe, keyboards, whatever....so when making a selection, try to stick to a position that person is "historically" known for.

And from time to time, I'll have a "theme week," which will limit band selections to a certain genre such as metal or punk, which will allow you to "borrow" band members that might previously be blocked out.

As for format, borrowing from xxxNightmare again:

When you post, please follow the criteria as demonstrated in this example:

Poster 1 votes for Robert Plant for vocalist, and his/her post should be like this:

Robert Plant: 1

Poster 2 votes for Bono, his/her post should be as follows.

Robert Plant: 1
Bono: 1

Poster 3 also votes for Bono:

Bono: 2
Robert Plant: 1

Please make sure you follow this criteria, posting the tally for ALL the bands nominated to make it easier for everyone (especially me!).

So to begin: select your favorite VOCALIST -- male or female, any genre, from the 1950s on to present -- to be the frontman (person) for the band!

Good luck, and happy voting! (Voting closes at 11 PM EST tomorrow)

Im going for Zappa more for a frontman than a fantastic vocalist. No matter who would be in the band after him, he could make it work, effortlessly.

Great choices....a lotta diversity there in the list. ;)

Just thinking about the format a little here --- specifically about combining multiple positions. I'm going to allow a vocalist who's already got a slot in the band to still be eligible for Guitar, Drums, Bass, or Keyboard (assuming they were historically associated with that instrument).....but only within the existing band, of course.

So, for instance, Elton John could logically be nominated for both Vocals and Keyboards, Dave Mustaine could double up on Vocals and Guitar, Kele Okereke could do the same, etc.

Also, for the most part, I'm not going to make a separate listing for Rhythm Guitar. When we vote on Guitarists tomorrow, you can choose a rhythm guitarist for lead as well.

And to the early naysaying posts: why the lack of faith? Has this been tried before, or do the mods have a problem with it or something...? I don't understand.

    1) the people here aren't a group of n00b followers who just pick the most popular candidate and run with it
    2) this group will be god awful unless the correct people get voted in, lets face it, if say, Janis Joplin became the vocalist, and then Dave Mustaine became the guitarist, then already this is not going to work

i'm not much of a fan, and would never consider her one of my favorites, but i can easily see why she'd be mentioned.

on the other hand, i'm a pretty big testament fan and i'm pretty caught off guard by your choice of chuck billy.

opinions and varying tastes, who would imagine?!

Good....that's exactly what I'm looking for. :) Intelligent, eclectic choices....and the posts so far have *definitely* delivered that.
    2) this group will be god awful unless the correct people get voted in, lets face it, if say, Janis Joplin became the vocalist, and then Dave Mustaine became the guitarist, then already this is not going to work
Again, this is fantasy, so who's to say what kind of rapport an eclectic band like this might generate? Sure, the clash of egos alone would probably doom a band like that to failure from the start, but then again, it worked fine for, say, The Traveling Wilburys.

And besides, as I said, I'm going to have "theme weeks" which will put together much more "likely" bands....bands rooted in the same genre, or in the same decade, or in the same region --- different themes, different weeks.

perhaps after the band has been assembled we then use the same method to pick a songwriter who could make it all work? :)

I was seriously thinking about adding a Lyricist category....whaddya think, are there a lot of people on the boards who know their songwriters enough to give it a shot?

If so, I'd also allow existing members of the band to qualify as well, of course --- wouldn't have to be an Elton/Taupin or Meat/Steinman arrangement....

    Done, and done, then.

That'll round it out nicely to a full week per band:

    Day 1: Vocalist
    Day 2: Guitarist
    Day 3: Drummer
    Day 4: Bass Player
    Day 5: Keyboardist
    Day 6: Lyricist
Day 7: Band Name finalizes it....on to the next band!
