Sell me on Coheed And Cambria.

edited February 2009 in History of Rock
I think I want to get into Coheed. My best friend is obsessed with them, and he keeps telling me to be as well. He first showed me A Favor House Atlantic, and I don't really like it. I think it's Claudio's voice, it's way too high and I find it very annoying. BUT, Rock Band showed me Welcome Home, and I LOVE that song. If they have more songs like that, then I'm sold. I'm also really intrigued by the whole fact that all of their albums are an overarching storyline, but the more I read into it, the more it seems lame because it's a Sci-Fi story, and that isn't really my thing. But if you can convince me otherwise, I'm all ears. Er, well, eyes, in this case.

ditto. I was surprised by Welcome Home, so i gave the rest of their discography a listen...what a waste of 2 hours.

What I personally enjoy about Coheed is the guitars. The singing, bass, and percussion almost always take a backseat to the guitar riffing and soloing; while I am normally not a huge fan of these types of bands (I love prominent rhythm sections to death), there's something about Coheed that I quite enjoy. I think it might be the guitar tone, because they remind me of Billy Corgan's playing, or the lyrics, because I'm a huge sci-fi geek. Here are a couple of my favorite C&C songs:

I'd say there's better bands with albums with a plot line, but I can't really help you with Coheed & Cambria, since I don't like them much.

why should anyone have to sell you on something.... cant you just like it or dislike it on its own merits? you DO have the ability to form your own opinion about stuff dont you?

i like a lot of their stuff. its interestingly done. they are not going to be labled the savior of music or anything like that, but its far from being bad.

    /edit/
should have added... if your friend is that into them... borrow some of their stuff from him for a couple weeks and go through it... if you still dont like it.... ok, you at least gave it a shot which is a good thing... if you do... go out and buy it.

...I do, but I don't want to misjudge the band because I only know two songs? You know if I said your favorite band sucked but only knew one song from Rock Band, you'd flame me for it. Sheesh. I also like to hear from actual fans what they like about them, and I don't want to accidentally hear the few bad songs they have and form an opinion around that (I'm not gonna listen to all 4 albums just to decide if I want to listen to them or not, 4 songs would suffice).

It's funny when the sideproject (Fire Deuce) is better than the main band (Coheed).

Also, how the hell did you hear Fire Deuce? I tried to give that one a shot, too, but could never find anything until giving up.

then again you already know I suck at finding new music XD

some of the more accessible songs IMO.

Also a plus, Coheed kicks ASS live. one of the best live bands ive ever seen.
I hope you do end up liking them, because Dammit they're different, and that's more than you can say for most bands today,

XD Sure thing. I'm not sure if I'll be on tonight, the girlfriend needs to be at work at 9:00 tomorrow and I'm her ride. So probably tomorrow night.

Also, I would like to provide a counter to Cubecubed. I'm a pretty big Coheed fan, but nowhere near obsessed.

And I agree with gowie, modern mainstream music sucks overall, but I'm quickly learning there's a wealth of underground music made of awesome.

The last time mainstream music was awesome was the '70s, so don't be surprised to find awesome underground music, 'cuz that's where the real music is anyway. Then again the early '90s had awesome mainstream music, but died away around '94 to '95.

Not true. I'm a Coheed fan, but am no way "obsessed" with them. A friend of mine got their triangle/symbol thing tattooed on him, that's "obsessed".

    I'm a casual fan.

If you liked "Welcome Home", you'll probably like this one too:

In this day and age, ease of production (digital recording, PCs, protools, cheaper, etc) and ease of distribution (internet, file sharing, youtube, burning CDs, etc) make music much more available outside of small bars and local scenes.

I dont think we remember it because it wasnt available.

3 is ****ing awesome. I've known of them forever but couldn't find their music until recently, thanks in no small part to gowie.

Although I would like to say I was disappointed by that cover. Nowhere near as bad as some of the others on that album (Run to the Hills was awful), but some of the others (Machine Head's version of Hallowed Be Thy Name, for example) were much, much better.

Coheed could have done better with it, IMO.

really? imo the onlyt mistake they made was letting travis sing the second verse instead of claudio.

That was a big part of it. It's just, I dunno', I was really excited for the song when I heard it, and it didn't live up to my expectation at all. And my expectation wasn't even all that high considering it IS a Maiden cover.
