100 greatest hard rock songs

edited February 2009 in History of Rock
Vh1 recently did a segment on the 100 greatest hard rock songs. Based on what people say on the internet...people didn't completely agree with it.
This was their top 10 songs, and not mine.
#10 Motorhead- Ace of Spades
#9 Van Halen- Runnin With the Devil
#8 Aerosmith- Walk this way
#7 Nirvana- Smells like teen spirit
#6 The who- Won't get fooled again.
#5 Metallica- Enter Sandman
#4 Black Sabbath- Paranoid
#3 Led Zeppelin- Whole Lotta love
#2 Ac/dc- Back in Black
#1 Guns' N Roses- Welcome to the jungle.

Now I don't completely agree with this list.
I'm here to discuss what you thought should have number one, becuase welcome to the jungle is a great tune, and would be in my top ten, but I wouldn't say it embodies the soul of Rock N Roll.
You can also list the top 10 songs in your own order, and what you think it should. Be. So go ahead.
(Please do not include any rolling stones or beatles because it doesn't fall into the category of what I'm talking about.

Vote for what you think is the greatest, if you selected other, what do you think it should be?

This is my top ten, most people probly wont agree with it.

#10 Ozzy Osbourne- Crazy Train
#9 Jimi Hendrix- Purple Haze
#8 Guns' N Roses- Welcome to the Jungle
#7 Metallica- Enter Sandman
#6 Deep Purple- Smoke on the Water
#5 The Who- Won't Get fooled again
#4 Led Zeppelin- Whole Lotta Love
#3 Black Sabbath- Paranoid
#2 Ac/Dc- Back In Black
#1 Led Zeppelin- Stairway to Heaven

the total list had WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY to much hair metal for my tastes. Come on...the Final Countdown is REALLY one of the best hard rock songs ever???

    hmm...*thinking*....yes... yes it is...

Of course, my view of the song has been forever skewed by Arrested Development.

That's funny... The Final Countdown has been hopelessly stuck in my head for the past few days because of Arrested Development.

I agree G'n'R ranked higher than Zeppelin is pretty awful.

Other than that, the list is pretty much just ass backward as ****. As said there's better songs by pretty much every artist on the list.

The list is more like "100 really popular songs by a bunch of famous bands that we failed at ranking."

it was voted on by the public. Vh1 had no say whatsoever.

its debatable for sure, but there are alot of undeniably great songs on that list. however, im disappointed that the only song by motorhead anyone ever references is ace of spades... sure its good, but that whole ALBUM is good too, and they have tons of other great songs and albums. definitely not a one hit wonder band as theyre often perceived to be.

I'd deny that the majority of the songs were great. They just seem like popular picks rather than actually great songs.

I'd probably say Rock Bottom by UFO is my favorite hard rock song, Emerald, Opium Trail, and Fly to the Rainbow would be also be up there.

also, how come the only Deep Purple song on the list is smoke on the water? And, if the who are on there twice...Why not the stones?

sorry that list fails imo. To much metal and not enough bands that don't speak English.

Welcome to the Jungle is a good song, but I think it deserved more credit than it really should've. I said Ace of Spades, it's really ass kickingly awesome.

Every song in the top 10 other than Runin' With The Devil, SLTS, and Whole Lotta Love is in a rythem game.

Won't Get Fooled Again, IMO, is the best rock song ever. It should have been number 1.

Ace of Spades is arse-numbingly boring, as with most of Motorhead's recorded output.

But it's true. Hard Rock and Metal have a square and rectangle-like relationship. A square is a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't a square. Same with Metal and Hard Rock.

Since when do VH1 get their genres correct?

RBF: there are lots of songs that share both descriptions. Genres/categories are subjective to the ear.
