Harrah's Rock Band Competition

edited June 2009 in Rock Band
Hey everybody,

This here is a discussion thread for the Harrah's Rock Band competitions happening (dates and more info available in the official press release linked here). Feel free to comment below with your experiences, try to get bands together, and otherwise just get ready. Below are some rules and guidelines for the events.

If you want to know how I'll be judging the Finals here you go - http://www.rockband.com/zine/harrahs_rock_judge

- All band members must be over 21 to compete. You do have to register for a Total Rewards Card at Harrah's (its free to sign up).

- All players will compete on the standard Rock Band 2 set up, an adjustable height drum throne will be provided. Bands can not bring their own equipment to use (not even drumsticks). The mic will be set to an appropriate sensitivity for the room that the competition is in, all bands will use the same settings.

- There is no entry fee to compete, you must perform one of the songs posted on the www.harrahs.com/rockband site to compete in the local competitions. In the regional and finals bands will perform 2 songs. One song will be randomly selected from the Harrah's list and the band may select their second song from the RB1/2 catalog but must be under 6 minutes long.

- The same members of the band must compete together in all competitions, locals, regionals and Atlantic City finals.

- The game will be calibrated prior to each competition night.

- There will be a few chances to win sweepstakes to go straight to the regional competitions to be hosted by competition sponsors, be on the look out for those.

- You can enter to win a trip to compete in the Vegas Regionals, skipping the local qualifying round on http://www.rockband.com/harrahs

- Harrah's Metropolis in IL needs more people to sign up. Address: Harrah's Metropolis Casino, 100 East Front St. Metropolis, IL 62960

- Harrah's added a "bandmate" finder on their site, meaning if you need a drummer to compete, go there. www.harrahs.com/rockband

Wow, I have fought with my wife over going to Vegas the week before this. I think I'd be pretty bummed if I was there and missed this by a week, so perhaps that's a consolation in not going at all??

As this already seems set up, I doubt you'll see new venues added now.

This looks fun. Philly and Atlantic City are a drivable distance for me. I would just have to find a pair of people willing to play with my gf and I in a band.

I just wish we can sign up for that total care membership or whatever online somewhere.
It really doesn't take long to get a Total Rewards Card. I'd say 2 minutes, maybe 3 tops. Get it at Ceasers, their lobby is huge and hard to miss.

    2 questions:
    1. Does everyone in the band have to be a Total Rewards member?
    2. Do we have to have 4 band members or we can have less than that?

Edit: Whoops. Nevermind, just read the FAQ's.

Hate to be the naysayer but, we all remember the VH1 Rb contest, that was joke. Hopefully this will be expert bands against expert bands at the end. Wish there was a competition in the Seattle Area I would kick its ass ..

I also wonder if you have to use the non modded RB instruments, guess I should read the FAQ's

    Edit :

Competitors are not allowed to bring their own instruments and must use the instruments provided at the Competition.

Guess this rules out peeps bringing their Kickboxes, Petals, and Kd8's to the show.

Will the drums be Ions? If you want the crowd to really get behind this, have an Ion set up there so it will look as real as possible.

My grandparents live in Valley Center, CA, right near the Harrah's there...but the Las Vegas local competition is held the two days before the regional competition, so you might as well just combine the trip and you're already at Vegas even if you lose!

So is the competition judged purely on score like it says in the press release? Couldn't someone just figure out the highest possible full band score you could get out of that list of songs and just do that song at every competition? Are you judged on performance/costumes/crowd reaction, since there are going to be celebrity judges at each of the regional competitions?

I hope it doesn't work that way because that's exactly how it would go down. The regional and finals rounds would be like a Madden tournament where everyone picks that year's money team and runs the same 3-4 plays. Boring! With online leaderboards and scorehero it won't even take much work to figure out the highest possible score and correct pathing.

Didn't it say something about judges...why would you need judges for a "Score" based system...or was the "celebrity judging" just for the finals.

I didn't bother reading through the whole thing when the lady indicated "I'm not singing this far pregnant"...I figured we could have gotten some empathy points!

Can we bring our Explorer guitars to use? I can do without the solo buttons as I prefer this guitar for better accuracy when i need it.

They wont even let you bring your own drum sticks, so I highly doubt you can bring your own guitar.

Any chance of seeing Apples at the Horseshoe in CB? I'd be willing to sit in the audience if I can't convince the pregnant missus that she can sing 8 months pregnant and earn some bonus points for going into labor in the middle of Teenage Riot!
Not likely. I researched it, but I am having multiple difficulties not limited to:

    * Finding enough band members

    * Finding band members that want to make fools of themselves (the scoring rules put an emphasis on "stage presence," peformance, and costuming.)

    * To register, you need some sort of a rewards card, which requires you to go to the casino (and probably gamble a certain amount)

Actually, you don't have to play or pay at all to get a Total Rewards Card. Just have a valid ID and they'll print up a card for you....all free.

Where did you see this part, because when I clicked on several of the links to the fine print it said results were determined by total score, which was then explained to be the in-game score. At least one of those rule sets was for one of the regional finals rounds because the prize was defined as the trip to the finals in Atlantic City and 8 tickets to the B-52 show. Its also worth noting that winning the regional and trip to AC is valued at $5000 and you will owe taxes on it, because times are tough and non-cash prizes that get taxed can be an unexpected kick in the junk come April 15.

I would have two and three covered...pretty sure my rewards card will show a few thousand $ spent there.

The Casinos I've ever been to the rewards card is mainly so they can keep track of you, one way or another. I've never ran into a one that requires you to gamble a certain amount.

I am in Las Vegas and need band players! I'm so stoked about this tourney that I nearly pulled a muscle in my arm playing tonight.
