    Experimental Rock?
That's most definitely not a genre. Experimental rock could be almost anything.

My thought exactly. I don't think Radiohead can be described as one true genre because they take several influences from many genres especially on Kid A and Amnesiac.

I agree with the fact that classic rock is not a genre.

There was nothing arrogant about what I said. Alternative Rock was a music scene/movement and nothing more. Unless you can tell me how the Pixies, Guided by Voices, fIREHOSE, R.E.M and Butthole Surfers sound the same or even similar.

    :)

I dunno, early alternative had a lot in common. Most of the bands called alternative nowadays are definitely not alternative though.

Even in the early 90s it was just a bunch of bands and musicians connected via a scene. I don't understand how many bands had similar aspects (outside of respective smaller scenes).

Sure Radiohead, Superchunk, etc. had a similar sound. But not a lot did for very long.

I wouldn't call the Pixies to sound similar to R.E.M or the Butthole Surfers....though that's just me :p

IMO you have no relevant view on alternative music to begin with.

They were alternative in that they were not hard rock, heavy metal, or punk I think was the original idea. My casual observation. Im definately not the go-to-guy on anything alternative related, though.

Hey I know my place. Getting into a tangle about alternative rock or punk or anything in the more experiemental sphere would probably be suicide, especially with you.

Back on topic: I don't know about greatest, but I do have my favorites. Since alt-rock is less of a defined genre and more of a state of mind (if you will), I am including post-punk, grunge, power-pop, and other more rigidly defined genres as falling under the alt umbrella.

    1. The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again
    2. Nirvana - Rape Me
    3. Depeche Mode - See You
    4. Oingo Boingo - Wild Sex (In The Working Class)
    5. The Velvet Underground - Sweet Jane

God, that was difficult. Ask me again tomorrow and the entire list will probably be different.

Top Songs/Albums/Bands lists are nearly impossible to do anyway.

I can do top bands with a great deal of difficulty, and probably top albums at gunpoint, but it's impossible for me to decide the top songs of any genre/band/whatever.

If by top people mean favorite sure, but usually when people say 'top' they infer to 'best' and we all know best is less subjective than favorite is. ;)

I don't think you can objectively define a top list for songs, genres, bands, guitarists, drummers, bassists, etc. I can tell someone who thinks Nickelback is the greatest thing to have ever walked the Earth, that they're unoriginal, lack songwriting skills, talent, etc., but at the end of the day that's not going to change his opinion of them.

    Uh....

    5. Paranoid Android-Radiohead
    4. Orange Crush-REM
    3. Undone-Weezer
    2. Jane Says-Jane's Addiction
    1. Teen-Age Riot-Sonic Youth

That's a list I made, although it was made quickly and without much thought.
