RBN Community Spotlight : January 2012

Happy 2012! Hopefully the impending apocalypse hasn't hampered your holidays! We're doing our best to convince our new alien/demon/zombie overlords that Rock Band conforms to their new world order. So with any luck we'll still be able to get our Rock Band on after the world ends later this year.

Enough of that! We've still get a good twelve months before the sentient Toast Crunch monsters rise up, so let's get on with this month's spotlight thread!

Like last month we're going to be focusing on three different aspects of Rock Band Network.

The past, the present, and the future.

We'll pull some recomendations from the past for awesome songs you should take a look at if you haven't done so in the past. We'll highlight all the songs we released in the previous month for the present to shine the light on some songs you might have missed in all the releases. Finally we'll reveal songs that we BELIEVE should be hitting play testing during the current month of the thread. (As everyone knows things happen that can delay songs hitting play testing, but that's the plan).

So look for the RBN Past, RBN Present, and RBN Future headings to know what part we're focusing on. We're (TAG), are going to do Past in the morning, Present in the early afternoon, and focus on Future in the late afternoon/rest of the evening.

However some authors only have limited time so they might do it all at once, or at intermittent times of the day.

Or they might follow their own thing and do something completely unique. The only 'rules' here are that we're having a community day for Rock Band Network and interacting with the RB community as a whole.

So with that here's our first RBN Past choice :

I Am King Tony - Stereo Stereo :
http://youtu.be/6rIpxawYkUA

Not only was this our first track EVER released, it's still one of my favorites. Just a really catchy pop punk song that has a real habit of getting stuck in your head.

Don't let the fact that this is a RBN1.0 song deter you from picking up this kick ass track.

You can buy it here if you like what you see/hear!
http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/80000675-0000-4000-8000-000045410869

Second up on our trip down memory lane is Rishloo - Downhill.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXl1Bt21DI8

Probably my favorite of all the Rishloo tracks from the album. Just an overall fantastic song.

If you like what you see/hear you can pick it up here!
http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/80000b93-0000-4000-8000-000045410914

We'll have two more past choices later this morning so stay tuned!

I did two RBN1 and two RBN2 last time for the Past reflection, so I'll do it again now.

    Shylo Elliott - Light

Our first ever release back in September 2010, and a bit of a test song for us. Shylo wrote this song as he was still experimenting with music and learning what he was good at. The version that made it onto Rock Band has a different bass track than the album version because the original bass in the song was admittedly very boring. It's a mellow composition, yet turned out very fun to play. There's nothing difficult about the song, but with a cool-sounding "guitar" solo, an atmospheric vibe with a venue (my first ever one) that matches the mood, unconventional drum patterns and 3-note chords in bass, it was a pretty interesting song to be our first one. We were lucky enough to have learned of Pro Drums before releasing it, so like all our other releases this song has full Pro Drum authoring and for 80 MSP, is worth a look.

Broken Equilibrium - Epitome of Misery (also available in 2x Bass Pedal)

Our first release from Broken Equilibrium, who were the first band to trust us with their songs. The drums are extremely fun on this one, with varied patterns throughout, and the guitar and bass cycle through different interesting patterns. Vocals are pretty interesting too; back then, when I authored the vocals, I thought that long tube in the chorus would be the longest tube on any of our releases. Never expected to get that Paul and Storm song with the longest tube in the whole game!

Psyguy - Wha-Chow Theme (Feat. ShadyVox)

Currently our shortest song, but also one of our most fun tracks. I've wanted to do this song forever, and it was a blast to work on. As the title says, it's the theme to the popular podcast Wha-Chow, which is one of the funniest podcasts I've ever listened to. The guitar is insane, the drums are relentless, and Shady's vocals are hilarious. For only 80 MSP, it's a hell of a deal. Shady later went on to collaborate with RBN band Rocket Ship Resort on an awesome cover of Blink-182's "Up All Night."

Active Knowledge - Dance Battle Alpha

Our first not-Rainbowdragoneyes chiptune release. I saw Active Knowledge perform at PAX East 2011 and met him, and one conversation and several emails later we signed his full "INFINITE" album. This is a rather fun, very active song with an awesome name that blends fast, danceable rhythms and patterns with atmospheric breaks. Drummers will love the disco beats, keyboardists will love the constant movement, and guitarists and bassists will enjoy the varied patterns the charts have to offer.

You guys should probably just make this an all-new announcements thing again. Personally, this is incredibly "eh" until the new stuff.

The last one didn't get a whole lot of attention like the others and this one's almost dead.

Here's the second of our past posts :

This song is such a solid piece of music, and it's criminally overlooked from our catalog. So I'm shining a light on it in hopes that more people will get a chance to take a look at it.

Order of Voices - Reaching Down :

The last of our past tracks is from goth/deathrock pioneers Christian Death.

Not only is Church of No Return a fun song to play in Rock Band, with a mid 80's original release date it's probably one of the older songs (not a re-record) on the entire network!

We still get the new stuff...it's just later in the day ;)

    Hey guys, Alt-Strum announcement time.

Because we have three new bands we're ready to announce, we'll be splitting our announcement into three parts with each part containing some of our favorite songs of ours from the past, present, and future. And without further ado, let's get to the content.

This is the section where I'll mention two of my favorite songs of Alt-Strum past.

    Arkaea - Gone Tomorrow

Almost a year to the day when this song hit the store, but it's easily one of my favorite songs in my entire Rock Band catalogue. A blast to play on guitar, bass, and drums, it's a song I recommend to anybody interested in a challenge without being completely overwhelmed by a wall of notes for the entire song, or anyone just into metal. A solid song, and one worth checking out!

CJ Ramone - Do it to Me

Like anyone needs convincing when it comes to a song by a former Ramones member. This song is a must have for Ramones fans, and definitely gives off a Ramone's vibe while playing like the Ramone's songs we have in game. Again, if you're a Ramone's fan, then this is a must have. If you aren't, still give it a look. Oh, and did I mention it's only 80 MSP?

December has been a good month for us, having released four tracks to the RBN. So, new to the RBN this month from Alt-Strum, we have:

All Shall Perish - My Retaliation (2x Bass Version), A Pure Evil

All Shall Perish Fans, get excited as you got two tracks this month, one being a double bass upgrade to My Retaliation (whose normal version came out last month), as well as "A Pure Evil", both songs off their latest album This is Where it Ends. Both songs are guaranteed to be difficult, and will push your abilities on guitar, bass, and drums.

    Deadlock - Martyr to Science

Deadlock returns to the RBN, a little over a year after the release of their track "The Brave/Agony Applause", and this time they're bringing "Martyr to Science" to your Rock Band library.

The Black Beverly Heels - Dark Beat

We get a lot of requests for some good 'ol rock n roll, and we're bringing you just that with the Black Beverly Heels.

All of the songs above are available for purchase through the in game Rock Band Network store!

And kicking off the part that some people may or may not be most excited for, here's the first announcement of the day from us in regards to new music coming, and personally speaking, one I'm very excited for as they remind me a bit of one of my favorite bands (who's frequently requested on these forums).

We're proud to announce that we're working with Las Vegas natives Amarionette to bring their song "Screaming is Serious Business", off their upcoming self titled EP due out later this year.

"Like most bands that have weathered through multiple years together Amarionette has gone through a couple of line-up changes. The core of the band consist of Quin White (Lead Vocals) who has been with the band since it's inception in 2007. Quin's very distinct vocal style and intricate song writing crafted the sound of early Amarionette and released the bands first EP "Goodbye Explosions" in 2008. Between the EP and playing frequently the band made quite a name for themselves leaving fans eagerly awaiting new material and more shows.

In 2010 Amarionette went through a major line-up change with the addition of Ron Wells (Bass), Nick Raya (Guitar), Brandon Jones (Guitar) and Justin Brooklyn (Drums). The regroup has brought a surge of new life and creativity to the band and they are picking things up right where they left off."

You can hear the demo version of "Screaming is Serious Business" at the link below

I've begun my uploading spree of new videos for this evening's announcements. Until then, since we covered Askari Nari's "A Tadg30 Song" in the last spotlight thread, I'll talk about our other release from December, "Ocaso Escarlata" by Nod 206.

Nod 206 is the first band from Paraguay to come to Rock Band, and this is the first of two tracks to hit the platform. Pure hard rock, with multiple guitars, fast-paced kick-heavy drums, a varied bassline and clean Spanish vocals. I absolutely love this song, and authoring the vocals in my native language was something I've wanted to do since I started CTA.

It's available in the store now for 160 MSP, and their second song for RBN, "[URL="www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVJlpM9R6bo"]En Donde Duermen Los Sue

While some people may have been up to date with every song that has been released since the RBN's inception, not everybody has, hence the point of some studios wanting to try to inform about older songs that may have flown under the radar.

That being said, if you want just an announcement, then we've got one for ya.

I believe this may be a first for the RBN, but we're proud to announce we're teaming up with the Canadian based folk-metal act, Scythia, to bring two of their songs to the Rock Band Network.

The two songs in question, "For the King" and "Dies Irae II", are from the bands 2011 release, Of Exile, which is described as
"...a musical tale of betrayal and redemption set in Scythia's unique soundscape that borrows elements from folk, progressive rock and metal. This album features a dynamic blend of male and female voices (both harsh and sung), classical instruments including cello, oboe and trumpet as well as professional sound design to give the album a larger-than-life appeal."

Before I announce new videos and songs, I'd like to advertise a bit until my last video uploads. ;)

Two songs have released from GigakoopsRBN since the last announcement thread. The first was Gigakoops' "Death In General." The song is so hard on guitar, non-authors debate whether the song is overcharted or not (I can tell you though that it's note-for-note). Don't believe it's nuts? Take a look at this solo. Reactions are priceless, too. So if you're into incredible difficulty, this should join your collection of RBN guitar songs.

This week, A Talking Fish's second RBN song, "(I Want to Go to) Space," was released on Rock Band. A short, sweet song about intergalactic adventures, this song is nothing short of fun. ATF even uploaded a new preview for you guys! So if you enjoyed "Cheesy Pop Song," you'll enjoy this, too.

So that's it until the last video uploads. And boy do I have some awesome videos for you!

You know me. I'm a man of the people. So if you want me to shut up about current songs and just stick with the new stuff, then who am I to argue?

I'm moving on to the 'future' stuff now, but the rest of you authors feel free to do your own thing :)

First up if you've been following our Facebook you probably noticed me mention that I've been chasing a band for a while and finally landed them. I also mentioned that I feel this yet undiscovered band is going to be our next Rishloo or Halcyon Way. Meaning that once these guys hit Rock Band Network everyone is going to be clamoring for more from them. Like Rishloo and Halcyon Way these guys are damn good musicians, and put together some amazing songs. We're working on the first track now, and it should go into testing in the next week or so.

Enough of me blabbering on. The band is RIBS and the name of the song is Brains Out.

A little about the band from Exploding In Sound:

There are far too few bands these days aiming to take over the world, but Boston’s RIBS seem to be up for the task. With a sound built for stadium audiences, their blend of epic alternative rock is already larger than life, and the young band has a stage show to match. Blistering space rock with anthemic choruses and mercilessly beaten drums¸ RIBS sound is primed with optimism, under thick layers of distorted guitars of course. The quartet’s range is truly special, as the band seamlessly moves from hook filled radio hits to slow burning post-rock rich in atmosphere and aggressive grunge to dark new wave inspired electro pop. Patience is a mandatory requirement for RIBS fans, as their carefully plotted moves and attention to detail can keep them away for extended periods of time, just making it all the more crucial when you get to see them live in action. Already earning comparisons to Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, and Radiohead throughout the press, RIBS are only getting started.

Personally I liked it as an announcement thread much better; it wasn't cluttered with all the past and present that was readily available in other threads.

I also think it served us better. Our purpose was to build RBN hype. With the old thread, instead of constantly announcing songs, we were able to build up hype for a whole month and have a day where RBN was constantly on people's minds as they waited for each new announcment to spring out.

Plus, they're less likely to miss announcements if that's all we post here.

Well, those were my two cents.

Last ASP announcement of the day, and due to seemingly popular request, we're giving you 100% new artist announcement, with no filler or other by products.

This artist marks a first for us here at Alt-Strum, as we've never brought a chiptunes artist before.
We're ecstatic to announce that we're working with Superpowerless, to bring some of their self described "Gameboy-fueled Adventure Core" songs to the RBN! The first song of theirs we'll be bringing is their single, "We Throw Shapes".

Er..... I don't see it. The instrumentation, structure, everything is far more generic than Rishloo or Halcyon Way.

    Good song I suppose though.

    French metal band ETHS!

We're working on two tracks from their upcoming album III that are so new...that the songs in question haven't even hit the internet yet.

You can check out the band's page here :

We're currently working on track 3 and 4 from the album. Adona

Next up is a song we announced a few months back, but now with game play footage!

This song is Oh My! with their single Twenty One.

    More to come!

I was both disappointed and glad that I misread when I first saw them as Oh No! Oh My!. I want that band in the game but... I want that band in the game. Y'know? :P

Anyway. Things! This should nicely group together the whole conceit in one, since all our announcements this round are returning efforts from our existing bands.

We've already mentioned, though it may have slipped under the radar, that Bright Midnight will be bringing another of their tracks to RBN through us, this time "La Minuit". This one's a bit shoegaze-y, and hopefully will be showing up in previews and playtest pretty soon.

Also returning for another round is techno-metal-pop favorites His Statue Falls! Redfield has given us the go-ahead for "Jasmin W. Knows How to Mosh", which is more on the metal side but if you play keys just go ahead and jump to 2:10. :)

And last, a new name from an old name. The third of John Brandon's (BSM, Those Among Us) projects to come to the game will be Distant Autumn, with the track "Edge of Town". Distant Autumn is pretty much BSM with a different vocalist, so the track's a fairly similar straightforward rock track. It's also not released anywhere yet, though that's just temporary. Don't think they would give us the exclusive just like that!

We are talking with a few of our other clients, but no selections are finalized or anything, so those we'll hold off on.

    ---

It's a bit too early to get into details on our bigger future project, since at best it's a month out. That and I can't let anyone get a jump on us. But, rest assured that if it works- and every day it's looking more like it will- it'll be a huge new thing for independent musicians, including a bunch of RBN artists. By huge I mean, on the scale of RBN itself. Quit-my-day-job huge. I'm almost scared that it's coming together.

    Awesome Rob!

Can't wait to hear what you've got cooking up. Sounds like it's going to be totally killer.

It's great that in these days of groups disappearing and just quitting, that you're still just as excited as when RBN first started.

Here's to the future, and I hope your project works out for you!

Well, I got this all done before I went to go out to eat with the family today. I feel content.

We have a bunch of new stuff to show you. First off, updates from previous announcements. New videos!

Active Knowledge - Your New Time Spiral
Fist of the North Star - Voices, Waiting for the End, Burning Out (link contains all 3 videos, Roaches video coming soon)

We might also be getting more stuff from Stik Man Records soon! Check out their site and tell me which artists you'd love to see from the label, and I'll pass the word along, see what I can do.

Now for new, previously unannounced stuff! We have 3 new artists to reveal today.

First off, I'm proud to announce that we've partnered with Holy War Entertainment to bring Orangevale, CA band SIMPL3JACK to RBN! The link contains the full news post and 3 preview videos. In short, this is a band of 15-year olds who play awesome punk music, and we've got their full debut album for RBN!

Next, another partnership, this time with thatCitymusic, to bring you some hip-hop tracks from Bikey! We've got our hands on some pretty diverse songs. Again, the link has more info and both preview videos for the two songs we're doing, and we're looking to get more from him in the near future!

Finally, you guitarists will love this. We've signed two songs from virtuoso guitarist Jim Morris to bring to RBN, and the word "insane" is not enough to describe them. They are amazing. Link has news and preview video for the song "Level 8," and we'll have a video of "River of Blood" out as soon as we can decipher the insanity in that track.

So, a full punk album, 3 hip-hop songs, two insane guitar instrumentals and potential new artists from Stik Man Records in addition to the FOTNS stuff. I'd say that's a good way to start off 2012.

A handful of these songs are in playtest now, with a couple hitting Peer Review soon. I'll update our thread and our website later tonight with info on where each song is.

As far as I know, that's it from us for the day!

OK, videos are uploaded, and I can get to work on announcing things!

First, some videos for songs that I've announced.

A few months back I said that forum member TylerFG was putting music on Rock Band. And now I have some videos up for his songs!

First up is Truism, which is less of a song and more of an experiment with music creation software. Doesn't mean I'm not releasing it, though :D Here's a preview.

Second up is Regeneration. A simple keyboard solo, this is the kind of music I'd imagine hearing on a loading screen. But it's fun to play! Here, take a look.

And last, we have Arc Words. A simple jam, this song offers a few fun riffs on everything. Here's a preview.

Also, I, Gigakoops, still have most of an album to release. First off is "Levels," a four-part melody inspired by different video games. Level 1 is furious, insane opening, with tons of notes crammed into 2 minutes. Level 2 calms down a bit, but is still a little tough on keys and drums. Level 3 is a drum and bass driven piece that includes some tough drum fills. And Level 4 is the easiest Gigakoops song to date, with an extremely laid-back style of play. And the song itself is rather relaxing.

On the other side of the coin, The Final Boss is the most insane Gigakoops song yet. If you thought the guitar on Death In General, the Drums and Keys on the earlier versions of Night, and the Bass on Project Unknown look hard, you gotta take a look at this! GigakoopsRBn does not take responsibility for broken instruments from fits of rage after failing this song.

And now, the moment you've been waiting for, A Talking Fish's "I Love GNF." With plenty of forum jokes and fun instrumentation and vocals, this song was built to satisfy everyone. I bet GNF and the Opening Acts are proud.

    But wait, there's more! Later...
