Well lately me and MMB have been listening to albums together and discussing them live. Recently we ran out of albums to do so we decided why not do the best? So this is our impressions on the 500 greatest albums ever based on the list by Rolling Stone.

Some albums are completely new to us and some we know and love, but we're going to do them all.

Here is the list if you're interested.

Let's begin shall we?

[1:25:39 AM] Blake Smith: not bad
[1:25:44 AM] Blake Smith: at least a change
[1:25:50 AM] Justin Preston: More self name dropping
[1:26:04 AM] Justin Preston: We know you are Outkast
[1:26:18 AM] Blake Smith: wait this is outkast?
[1:29:10 AM] Justin Preston: Sounding all warped
[1:29:22 AM] Blake Smith: slowing down
[1:30:34 AM] Blake Smith: back when people used cd's
[1:30:43 AM] Justin Preston: Well that was Aquemini
[1:30:51 AM] Justin Preston: Top 3?
    [1:31:07 AM] Blake Smith: um...
[1:31:45 AM] Justin Preston: I'm going with Rosa Parks cause I liked it, Liberation cause Cee-Lo, and Spottieottiedopalicous (sp?) cause of the name.
[1:32:03 AM] Blake Smith: I guess Rosa Parks, Aquemini, and Da Art of Storytellin' Part 2
[1:32:29 AM] Blake Smith: meh i don't really know how to judge it
[1:32:35 AM] Blake Smith: i have nothing to compare it too
[1:32:35 AM] Justin Preston: Well I only liked one song but it's not a genre I usually enjoy
[1:33:00 AM] Blake Smith: it could be the best hip hop/rap album ever but i wouldn't know
[1:33:09 AM] Justin Preston: Yeah I guess
    [1:33:45 AM] Blake Smith: 2 or 3 i guess
[1:33:56 AM] Justin Preston: I was gonna go 4 or 5
    [1:34:02 AM] Justin Preston: I don't know
[1:34:13 AM] Justin Preston: Bit of a rocky start to our journey
[1:34:21 AM] Blake Smith: it'll get better
[1:34:25 AM] Justin Preston: Too many N bombs
[1:34:41 AM] Justin Preston: Well B.B. King should be more my speed.
[1:34:43 AM] Blake Smith: just wait til wayne and notorious BIG
    [1:34:51 AM] Justin Preston: Yikes

I do not like this list. How the hell does Lil' Wayne make the list? And there's not much punk in there at all (for variety's sake this is a bad thing).

I do look forward to seeing you guys react to each and every single album, though.

    This is ridiculous.
    This is awesome.
    I want in.
I'm gonna make my own album discussions.
Or maybe you can just let me join in on select albums.
    That would be cool.
    You know what, never mind.
    Have fun doing this.

The discussion was good, and I look forward to seeing more of them....

... But Pearl Jam's Ten not being in the top 200 and not a single Muse album in sight make me not like this list. :(

    Got to expand.

I also noticed there's no Yes or Genesis or any other prog that I know of. But there are weird compilations and greatest hits collections both of which I don't agree belong on the list, but I'm not here to judge the list, I'm just listening to the albums.

    Rolling Stone hates prog.

Moving Pictures deserves a spot on the list over The Best of the Girl Groups. It's easy to make one of the greatest albums of all time if I can pick the best songs from a large group of artists.

I have not yet discussed the possibility of bringing in other people with MMB. We shall see. It wouldn't be permanent if we do it at all.

Also we may throw in a few other albums with the list. Or I thought of the idea of replacing just a few of the compilations with our own picks. I'll talk it over with Justin.

I honestly have no idea how long this is gonna take. Months probably if not longer.

Ok so this is what we have decided. We have 25 slots that we have decided to swap out the compilations and others for some bands that we think should have been on the list but weren't. Then we came up too many so we're going to let you guys vote on what bands get into the list and also what album by them is the best.

    Muse
    ELO
    Genesis
    Yes
    Cake
    Boston
    Donovan
    Rush
    Meatloaf
    Frank Zappa
    King Crimson
    BNL
    Warren Zevon
    The Flaming Lips
    Jimmy Eat World
    Styx
    They Might Be Giants
    Black Keys
    Huey Lewis
    Fratellis
    Dream Theater
    Van Der Graaf Generator
    Ben Folds Five
    Bob Seger
    Alice In Chains
    Megadeth
    Anthrax
    Slayer

So yeah bascially we have 25 slots to fill and 28 entries. So instead of voting for 25 just tell us which 3 shouldn't be in there and then we'll do a vote for which album to listen to
  • WitticusWitticus VERY DEEP

    Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
    Fratellis - Costello Music
    Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Edit: I was doing good suggestions dammit.

    The Fratellis - Costello Music
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
    Cake - Comfort Eagle
Barenaked Ladies - Your pick (that's not what the album is called; I'm letting you pick the album)

Let me be there if you do these. Please. I'll pay you.

Or... actually, you know what? Maybe I'll just start my own music-listening thread with Witt or dog.

The only albums that I own in the Top 500 list are:

    Arcade Fire - Funeral
    Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
    The Clash - London Calling
The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs
Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
R.E.M. - Automatic For The People
Queen - A Night at the Opera
    Green Day - American Idiot
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
    Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle
Bob Marley & the Wailers - Legend
    The White Stripes - Elephant
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
    Wilco - Yankee Tango Foxtrot
Everything by Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles

Still, I'm kind of ashamed. I should have more. But a kid can only make so much money, you know? And I'm more into television than music.

I love Anthrax, but they don't have anything close to the greatest album ever. Meatloaf has one ok album and some singles. Genesis never was able to stay awake through an entire album.

I don't think its fair to have a compilation album on a greatest albums list. Anyone can put together a bunch of songs on a mix tape. Teenage girls do it all the time. Talent is creating your work as a band.
