Rock Band DLC Re-licensing Info - Updated Quarterly

We wanted to give you a heads up on an upcoming change to a limited number of older legacy DLC songs currently available in the Rock Band library. When licensing songs for release for any platform, including DLC, agreements include term limits on how long the content may be sold on a given platform. This isn’t specific to Rock Band – it’s something that exists in pretty much all licensing agreements. Now, over 5 years since the release of the first batch of Rock Band DLC, we’re reaching the end of some of the earliest licenses we secured. Our Music Team has been hard at work extending these licenses to make sure that this has as small an impact on the community as possible, but there may be a very limited number of songs that will no longer be offered for new purchases in the Rock Band store.

What does this mean for you, Jane and John Q Rock Band? Read on:
  • If you’ve already bought these tracks, nothing changes. Tracks that you’ve purchased/downloaded are yours. Relicensing should not affect content already in your library.
  • Select legacy tracks, primarily from the earliest DLC releases, may no longer be offered for new purchase in the Rock Band Store. Again, if you’ve already purchased these tracks you should be entirely unaffected.
  • If for any reason you need to redownload this content (i.e. in cases of console transfer, hard drive space management, etc.) you should be able to do so even if that content is no longer available for new purchasers in the store. For more information on how to redownload content, check your download history on your console or online, and consult 1st party support channels
As of right now, the only content affected is Metallica Pack 01, the tracks “Ride The Lightning”, “And Justice For All”, and “Blackened”, all of which were released on November 20th, 2007. This content has already been pulled from the Rock Band Store and from 1st party marketplaces.

We’ll post as more information becomes available, with relicensing updates likely coming in on a quarterly basis. We’re hard at work to minimize the impact on the Rock Band catalog and Rock Band community, securing extensions for an overwhelming majority of content and, most importantly, making it a priority to give you advance notice in the future if songs are expiring and have to come down. We’ll do our best to make sure that you have one last chance to buy these legacy catalog tracks!

Rock on,
Harmonix

    Hey gang,

We're approaching the quarterly re licensing mark again. The Music Ops team has been hard at work and has done a kick ass job of retaining the lion's share of the content released in that time frame. Below are the tracks scheduled to come out of the store on June 30th, 2013:

    Crooked X - "Rock 'n' Roll Dream"
Die Toten Hosen - "Hier Kommt Alex"
    Les Wampas - "Manu Chao"
The Material - "Moving to Seattle"
Them Terribles - "Bullets & Guns"
    Tokio Hotel - "Monsoon"
    Vesuvius - "Promised Land"

    MTV2 Pack 01

The same info from the OP still applies, most notably that you shouldn't be affected at all if you already own these songs. Hopefully the 4 week notice will give everyone interested enough time to pick up these songs, which are currently available for 50% off in the Music Store. Please follow up on the forums if you have any additional questions and we'll respond as best we can.

    ***FAQ EDITS***

Here are a few As to the most common Qs about this announcement.

    * In addition to these singles, MTV2 Pack 01 will also be pulled from the store. The pack is being pulled because 2 of the singles included in the pack (the tracks by The Material and Them Terribles) are coming down. The remaining song in the pack, "A Clean Shot" by The Myriad, should remain in the store as a single.

    * "Hier Kommt Alex" by Die Toten Hosen is a very unique release. It was released as DLC in the US and it was included in the RB1 export overseas. As such, there are some very edge case licensing issues at play, which resulted in the track being unplayable in RB3 and Blitz. That is still the case, but the track will remain purchasable in the RB1 and RB2 stores through June 30th. Additionally, the fact that "Hier Kommt Alex" is being pulled from the store won't affect the RB1 EU export pack, so users that acquired the track through export should be able to re download the entire export pack if need be.

    * The track "Promised Land" by Vesuvius is a free song. The RB3 achievement / trophy Live Free or Die awards 25 G when you "Beat all of the free downloadable songs for Rock Band". Unfortunately that means that this achievement will no longer be attainable once "Promised Land" is removed from the store on June 30th. But "Promised Land" is still free, so grab it before June 30th (along with "Still Alive", "Headphones On", and "Charlene", all of which are also free) if you'd like to lock this achievement down at some point in the future. You don't need to earn the achievement before 6/30, you just need to download "Promised Land" before 6/30, and then you'll be able to try for the achievement at your convenience.

    ***UPDATE***

We've received a slight update to the date initially listed. These tracks should still be available via the Xbox 360 and PS3 online marketplaces until 6/30 as initially reported, but they'll be pulled from the in game store on Friday 6/28. You'll still have until 6/30 to pick these up, but the majority of people make their DLC purchases in game, so we wanted to make everyone aware.

    ***UPDATED UPDATED***

We've had a few reports on 6/27 that these songs are already unavailable on PS3, both in game and via the PSN store online. We haven't done anything off schedule on our end, but it's possible that Sony pulled content earlier than expected. We'll look into it, but it's unlikely we'd be able to get a response and get song availability restored only to have to pull them down again in 24 hours. Thankfully we've had several weeks to message that these tracks are coming down, so hopefully this last minute hiccup on PS3 doesn't affect too many last minute stragglers.

We'll push to make sure that dates are even clearer for the next round of re licensing.

    Hey gang,

It’s been almost 3 months since our last re licensing update, and we have another round of announcements. As with the previous updates, these songs are coming down from the in game store, but if you already downloaded them nothing should change for you. Check the above posts for more info, and if there are additional questions that need clarification we’ll be sure to add an FAQ to this post.

The good news is that we’re giving more notice for these tracks than we’ve been able to previously. With the exception of one track, the content listed below is scheduled to come out of the store on September 30th, 2013, giving DLC completionists, hold outs, and latecomers 6 weeks to pick up this content.

This is the track that will be pulled from the store on August 28th:

    T.Rex - Bang A Gong

These are the songs that will be pulled from the store on September 30th:

The Janitors - Get Your Rock On
    Locksley - All Over Again
Locksley - Don't Make Me Wait
    Locksley - She Does
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Snow (Hey Oh)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Tell Me Baby
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Apache Rose Pea****
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Breaking the Girl
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Funky Monks
Red Hot Chili Peppers - I Could Have Lied
Red Hot Chili Peppers - If You Have to Ask
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Mellowship Slinky in B Major
Red Hot Chili Peppers - My Lovely Man
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Naked in the Rain
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Sir Psycho Sexy
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Suck My Kiss
Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Greeting Song
Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Power of Equality
Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Righteous and The Wicked
Red Hot Chili Peppers - They're Red Hot
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge

    Locksley Pack 01
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik Album Pack

As with previous re licensing announcements, we don't have complete control over first party schedules, so while the dates above reflect when we plan to remove content from the in game store you may see changes a few days earlier or a few days later on the console and online marketplaces. We'll post updates if it appears that the schedule will change at all, but if you're interested in picking these tracks up we definitely wouldn't recommend waiting until the last minute.

One final reminder: seeing as how this is all pre RB3 content, all the tracks and packs listed in this post are currently available for 50% off. Singles should be 80 MSP / $1, the Locksley Pack 01 should be 240 MSP / $2.99, and the entirety of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, all 16 tracks, should be 800 MSP / $9.99.

    ***FAQ EDITS 8/22***

Here are a few quick responses to some common questions about this round of announcements. If there are still details that aren't clear, hit up the forums or ask us on social channels, and we'll answer to the best of our ability and track relevant info here.

    * Yes, "Bang A Gong" is an As Made Famous By recording, not the original studio master.

    * The Pro guitar upgrade for "Under the Bridge" will be coming down with the rest of the RHCP tracks listed above on 9/30.

    * DLC codes included with the Mad Catz manufactured Mustang bundles should still redeem "Under the Bridge" and the associated Pro upgrade as normal. So if you haven't redeemed your code, or if you track one of these bundles down at retail, the codes are expected to function normally.

    * "Snow ((Hey OH))" will still be exportable from Rock Band Track Pack Vol 2. As mentioned in previous rounds of re licensing, disc based content operates differently from downloadable content.

Those are the most frequent questions that I've seen, but we can add future updates if anything else that requires broadcasting comes up before 9/30.

    Hey gang,

It's that time again. Below you'll find the list of 7 singles we were unable to re license for the Rock Band DLC store. These tracks should remain up for purchase until December 30th, 2013, which gives you nearly 6 weeks to pick up any of these songs if you've held off on them until now. Credit where credit is due: even though we'll be losing these 7 tracks next month, the Music Ops team spent months working with bands and labels to ensure that we retained hundreds of other tracks.

As with the previous updates, these songs are coming down from the in game store, but if you already downloaded them nothing should change for you. Check the above posts for more info, and if there are additional questions that need clarification we’ll be sure to add an FAQ to this post.

    • Crooked X - “Gone”
    • Naked Brothers Band - “Body I Occupy”
    • Naked Brothers Band - “I Don’t Want To Go To School”
    • Scars on Broadway - “They Say”
    • System of a Down - “B.Y.O.B.”
    • System of a Down - “Toxicity”
    • Tokio Hotel - “Ready, Set, Go!”

As with previous re licensing announcements, we don't have complete control over first party schedules, so while the dates above reflect when we plan to remove content from the in game store you may see changes a few days earlier or a few days later on the console and online marketplaces. In fact, because of the upcoming holiday, it's very likely that these tracks will be pulled earlier than scheduled, as 1st party generally avoids store updates during the last week of the year. We'll post updates if we get more specific confirmation on the holiday plan, but if you're interested in picking these tracks up we definitely wouldn't recommend waiting until the last minute.

One final reminder: seeing as how this is all pre RB3 content, all the tracks listed in this post are currently available for 50% off. Singles should be $1 on Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii.

    ***FAQ EDITS 11/27***

    * We've gotten word from SCEA (aka Sony America) to expect a 12/17 pull date for the affected tracks. No word on a timeline from SCEE (aka Sony Europe) yet, but it's likely they'll have the same schedule. So be aware that tracks may / will likely be pulled earlier than the initial 12/30 date.

    * System of a Down's "Toxicity" was available as DLC for Rock Band Unplugged on the PSP, but it will be pulled in this round of re licensing as well. In the future, RB DLC and RB U DLC share the same licenses so if a track is pulled from one it should be pulled from the other as well.

    Hey gang,

Not much of an announcement this time around, as we expect to re secure all licenses for this quarter! That's still not set in stone, and there's always chance that we may get urgent requests from some labels / bands that require our immediate attention, but for now we don't believe that we'll be pulling anything from the store this quarter.

If that plan changes at all, we'll be sure to announce which content is at risk, and give the community as much notice as possible so you don't miss out on a last chance to purchase. As always, tracks you already own aren't included in these re licensing efforts, so if you've already purchased specific tracks then you've got nothing to worry about.

Unless something urgent pops up, expect the next re licensing update in about 3 months time.

    ***4/4 EDIT***

Unfortunately it turns out that we do have two updates to make regarding this wave of re licensing after all.

Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" will be coming out of the DLC store on 4/30. We know, definitely a bummer. But on the other hand, literally everyone in the world should already own this song! It's one of the most popular tracks in RB, and is absolutely essential in an RB party setting. And it's only $1. And remember, if you've already bought "Don't Stop Believing" then you won't be affected by this change at all.

Additionally, after 5 years of availability the 20 Free DLC offer from Rock Band 2 has expired, and the redemption page is no longer live. As with other previously purchased / downloaded content, if you already have these tracks then nothing changes for you.

    ***5/14 EDIT***

There's another late edition to this re licensing update, as we got word that another track has to come down from the store.

"Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine - Pt 1" by James Brown, and the associated Get The Funk Out Pack 01 will come down from the store by 5/30. Keep in mind that we don't control when first party updates their store, so they may pull before that time depending on when they usually update content.

We'll follow up with additional updates if anything else comes up.

    Hey gang,

Below are the back catalog DLC tracks that will be affected in the next round of relicensing. These tracks should come down from the store on Tuesday August 26th, so you still have a few weeks left to pick them up. As always, content updates on a different schedule for every console, so you may see content affected a little earlier or a little later, but that date is the most up to date info we have at the moment.

    The affected tracks include:

    Fleetwood Mac - "World Turning"
    Fleetwood Mac - "Don’t Stop"

Spinal Tap - "(Funky) Sex Farm"
Spinal Tap - "(Listen to The) Flower People (Reggae Style)"
    Spinal Tap - "America"
Spinal Tap - "Back From The Dead"
    Spinal Tap - "Big Bottom"
Spinal Tap - "Cups and Cakes"
Spinal Tap - "Gimme Some Money"
    Spinal Tap - "Heavy Duty"
    Spinal Tap - "Hell Hole"
Spinal Tap - "Rock N Roll Creation"
Spinal Tap - "Rock ‘n’ Roll Nightmare"
    Spinal Tap - "Saucy Jack"
    Spinal Tap - "Stonehenge"
Spinal Tap - "Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight"
Spinal Tap - "Warmer Than Hell"

    Spinal Tap Pack 01
    Spinal Tap’s Tap Ten

As with the previous updates, these songs are coming down from the in game store, but if you already downloaded them nothing should change for you. Check the above posts for more info, and if there are additional questions that need clarification we’ll be sure to add an FAQ to this post.
  • Hey gang,

Today marks the 5th anniversary of the release of The Beatles: Rock Band! As with all other Rock Band releases, we’ve been working with all the parties involved to secure licensing extensions to make sure DLC for The Beatles: Rock Band is able to remain in the store for as long as possible.

We don’t have 100% confirmation just yet, but we’re hopeful that we’ll be able to extend the offers so you’ll continue to be able to pick up “All You Need Is Love”, and the full albums for Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Rubber Soul if you haven’t grabbed them already.

We know that 9/9 is an important day for those of you in the RB community, and it’s important to us at Harmonix as well, which is why we wanted to make sure we had an update posted today. We’ll update you as soon as we have more details about continued availability, but for right now we’re happy to report that all The Beatles: Rock Band DLC is still available for purchase on all consoles.

We greatly appreciate the love and support you’ve shown The Beatles: Rock Band these last 5 years. I’d like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we’ve passed the audition.

    Hey gang,

It's been a while since the last relicensing update, just over 4 months since the last update at the end of July, but we'll be saying farewell to a few more tracks in the RB DLC library at the end of December.

As has been the case with all previous relicensing updates, if you already own these tracks then nothing should change for you. The OP in this thread has some additional info, but the short version is that these songs are coming down from the store, not your personal set list, and the only people affected by this announcement are the people that haven't purchased these tracks in the 5 years that they've been available. Here is a list of the affected tracks:

    • Dinosaur Jr. – Pick Me Up
    • Dinosaur Jr. – The Wagon
    • Electric Six Pack 01
    • Electric Six – Dance Epidemic
    • Electric Six – Gay Bar
    • Electric Six – I Don’t Like You
    • Joan Jett & The Blackhearts – Fake Friends
    • Just Kait – U Suck
    • Lights Resolve – Dreaming of Love
    • Morningwood – Best Of Me
    • Morningwood – Sugarbaby

These tracks are scheduled to come down from stores on December 23rd.
We don't control when 1st party updates their stores, so you may see content come down a little earlier or a little later. Store updates during the holiday are occasionally wonky, so if you're looking to pick up these tracks before they are pulled then you're probably better off not waiting until the last minute.

Shoot me a DM or mention me in a thread if you have any questions or concerns and I can edit this thread as needed.

    ***12/10 EDIT***

    * The track "Dreaming of Love" by Lights Resolve is a free song. The RB3 achievement / trophy Live Free or Die awards 25 G when you "Beat all of the free downloadable songs for Rock Band". Unfortunately that means that this achievement will no longer be attainable if you do not download "Dreaming of Love" before it is removed from the store on December 23rd. The same thing happened with "Promised Land" by Vesuvius, another free track pulled last year, so you will need to have that song in your library as well. If you didn't download "Promised Land" before it was pulled then you won't be able to get the achievement even if you do download "Dreaming of Love". If you do have "Promised Land" and if you do download "Dreaming of Love", you don't need to earn the achievement before 12/23, you just need to have it in your library by that time and then you'll be able to try for the achievement at your convenience.
