Note: This started as a proposed setlist for Rock Band 4 and evolved from there... lots of thought went into this sucker!
  • Range of difficulties, genres, & interesting instrument parts taken into consideration
  • Leaned towards giving new bands a chance - you could easily craft a great setlist entirely from past RB artists (which I eventually did - see replies below!), which made for a fun challenge
  • Avoided copying past Guitar Hero setlists too much; also avoided straight-up Pop songs for the most part, more in line with RBs 1 and 2 (sorry poptimists!)
  • Aimed for "rocking", upbeat, dynamic, party-friendly songs with a few (hopefully) interesting digressions, HMX-style
-Key-
B = Bass Solo(s)
D = Drum Solo(s)
G = Guitar Solo(s)

    Whoa embarassing... I think I even own that song. I never thought I'd be that one guy that forgets DLC. Guess I'll be swapping it out...

    Swapped in Loretta Lynn & Jack White for The Strokes. Variety is good.

    Also swapped out Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars for Alabama Shakes. Funk that funk.

    A lot of people are predicting Uptown Funk for RB4 and I really hope they're wrong. Sure, the song was popular like 2-3 months ago, but it's steadily losing popularity. Who's going to want to even hear that song in Fall?

    I thought it was good when it first came out, then I noticed how repetitive it was, both musically and lyrically.

    Good list, though. Glad somebody's focusing on songs without keys. I'm super worried RB4's going to have some songs with great keyboard parts we're never going to get to play (like a lot of legacy stuff).

    I don't think The Lumineers are southern rock. They're more folk rock.

    You hit the nail on the head! I actually went through the exact same realizations as you, and swapped it out exactly for that reason.

    Thanks! I dread the same thing... it's a real shame about no keyboards. I'm clinging to an atom of hope that they'll reconsider, but it seems doubtful sadly.

    Totally agree, it's some kind of neo-folk, but I was trying to stick with RB's existing genres and The Lumineers (and Mumford & Sons, and Of Monsters and Men, and Vance Joy, etc etc) don't really fit in any of them... I thought about listing them as alternative or pop/rock, but yeah... I don't really know (I've really thought about this way too much).

    St. Vincent - "Birth in Reverse" is on-disc! Who'd a thunk it? Now replaced by a different song.

    Plus Alabama Shakes was revealed as launch DLC (a different song than "Hold On", but still); swapped out to give another band a chance.

    Why am I disappointed that Army Of Me by Björk is not in your setlist?

    Why am I disappointed that Army Of Me by Björk is not in your setlist?

    Well... shoot. That is an excellent question Coldplayer.

    Honestly I'd loooove to see Björk in RB but I've struggled to find songs that would work well. That's why I put in The Sugarcubes instead... not the same, but I'll take whatever I can get. "Army of Me" is probably the best choice though.

    What the hell I'll throw some Björk in there. (Adios, Garbage!)
  • Pretty good stuff on here. I really like the inclusion of Wolf Alice, Thursday, and AFI. I would snap this up in a heartbeat, as there's not much on here I don't like.

    I can't believe I'm saying this, but...there's not much metal. I get that criticism on pretty much every setlist I've ever made on here, so I feel your pain, but I feel like the setlist is generally lacking in heaviness. Also--this isn't really a big deal, just an observation--some of the genres on here are, like, really off (e.g. AFI as nu metal, Auf der Maur as metal, Hey Ya as pop rock, etc.). Again, that doesn't really matter, just something I noticed.

    Personally, I love this setlist. I don't think it's realistic (I mean, with Tool, Michael Jackson and U2), but I'd be happy to get an RB4 like this.

    Thanks! Glad you like it. At first I tried to make it realistic, but in the end sneaked a few wishlist-y choices in.

    I fully acknowledge both of your points - as far as metal goes, I just don't know enough about the genre aside from the most popular bands & songs. There are some "hard"er songs in other genres that I was hoping would kinda balance things out (like Tool, Deftones, etc), but it's true... if you're just counting up Metal tags, purists may be disappointed.

    As for genre categories, yeah some are probably a stretch, partially because I'm not great at placing them. To me, a lot of songs & bands can be sorted several ways; makes for fun discussion.

    I like the variety I see here - Bowie, Heart, Prince, Simple Minds, Bjork, OutKast, even R. Kelly, but especially HAIM. It's got a bit of everything, just as I feel Rock Band should be. Variety is key, and you've got that down.

    Edit: F*** yeah, Cyndi Lauper.

    I love that you have all genres covered by bands not seen before on the platform, I do agree though that the set list feels light. I'm not saying add the entire A7X discography, but i do enjoy a nice guitar shred here and there.

    What was the Garbage song you had? I'd assume Only Happy When it Rains.

    EDIT: ass? ha, i meant add ;)

    That's a fair critique. Close - it was actually "Stupid Girl", but I could've just as easily slotted in "Only Happy When It Rains" (I remember debating between the two).

    You probably laugh at me for this one, what does devil tiered mean?

    Ha HA! Just kidding. Very reasonable question actually. Basically, it's the "highest difficulty level" for a given instrument in a song.

    Like on the song selection screen there's the 5 little dots showing how tough a song is on, say, guitar. The toughest songs have 5 red "dots" that are shaped like mini-devil heads. Devil tier. Totally metal.

    Woohoo "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is in! Another crossed off.

    Plus, made several song or artist swaps to increase setlist diversity, with new artists including Aretha Franklin, Mars Volta, Asia, Rainbow, and more. A shiny new high five(!) if you can spot them all, while reciting the alphabet backwards.

  • Outkast & Royal Blood (huzzah) - two more scratched off the list... Which means surely it's only a matter of time before the likes of Pink Floyd, Guns n Roses, & Prince make their Rock Band debut! o:)
  • Love a lot of it, including pretty much the whole 2010s. Nice job, great variety!

    Updated for incoming Cyndi Lauper - yahoo! Swapped in a new band.

    Based on DLC releases so far (less 60's & 70's, more hit singles focused, & way more pop), seems pretty darn unlikely this list will come to full fruition. Or at least for a very long time. And that's okay... as long as RB is alive & kicking, I'm thrilled.

    Simple Minds DLC ahoy! Crossed off list, will replace with another New Wave band (most likely)... a rock song - The Cult's "Fire Woman".

    Made a bunch of other artist swaps to better diversify the list. Also took out all on-disc RB artists, to be used in an upcoming new setlist!!
  • army_of_mearmy_of_me Rising Star

    I thought it might be fun to create an opposite version of the setlist above - basically a Rock Band made up entirely of past on-disc RB artists! As sort of a companion to my original setlist, I decided to keep this in the same thread. (mistake?)
    • RBs 1, 2, 3, 4, Lego, Blitz, Beatles, Green Day = fair game
    • Aside from minor poaching from the GH series, the same rules as before generally apply (rules/restrictions give things an interesting twist imho)
    • Went with a few non-obvious choices for flavor (& because I think they'll work well in the game), but they are all either singles and/or fan favorites
    • Incidentally, I think the song difficulty here is much more challenging on average than my first setlist (not intentional!)
    • It's a lot of songs but it's a lot of great bands, dammit!
