Rivals Play Bonus XP Changes Now Integrated Correctly!

  • I don't see why there has to be such aggressive decay.

When the XP was changed to go based on song length that took away most of the cheese factor.

Having minor decay would take away the rest of it, no need to make it this heavy handed.

No good player with a decent sized library is going to spend their time playing only the easiest songs when XP is down to 70% or less. All the further decay is only hurting people with small libraries - taking away their ability to contribute meaningfully...
  • I'm glad this had been clarified! Thanks owl

Now can I complain and agree with those that suggest it is now pay to play? I don't like this system because it absolutely kills all xp grinders that don't have a huge libraries or like myself have decent libraries but still end up will low song count weeks.

This new system makes me think back to a week when I was in the greatest crew ever assembled.....shout out to WC......anyway one challenge I only had 40 songs which I played over and over for 555 plays and a 1st place xp medal. On the new system it wouldn't make a lot of sense or even be helpful to play past the 4th or 5th play through. So the only way to truly help your crew by being an xp grinder is to buy your xp weekly by purchasing a ton of songs.....this makes me sad

sadly this is the result of people spamming short songs like Charlene and taking advantage of the system.

like the saying goes, the few ruin it for the many.

No, they already fixed that where you got much less XP for short songs so no advantage playing those. Amount of XP is directly tied to the length of the song.

The XP change now seems to be to do with letting people get their own crew play bonuses but balancing it to promote still playing a wide spread of songs.

I just deleted a long rant that had nothing to do with this thread...so at this point, let me just say thank you Hmx for the new clarification!

Don't like the new change. When I buy a new challenge song I want to play it on all instruments at least once before getting penalized

I would agree here so that the decay starts at play #4. That allows you to play each song at least once per instrument. It doesn't affect me but it does make sense considering it's just one more play and you do include four instruments in the game.
  • Do you lose XP trying to get a good score? Sure, but I have to agree with HMXOwl, it's the price you pay for the highest spotlight scores..

100% in agreeance here. I'm completely against playing a song 50 times to get that one more point. That's what Practice Mode is for. I practice every Spotlight song I'm unsure of before I play so I only have to play 2 times at most to get a good score. What if you went to a concert and the band played the same song over 5-6 times saying "Wait, wait, we'll get it right this time", would that be cool?
  • The only reason I'm against this is because this penalizes one-man crews, which I get is kinda contradictory, but is also my situation because I am a stubborn man who won't leave his crew of deadbeats. When it was band play per instrument, I could get both first play on Spotlight Songs and collect the bonus XP, meaning I was multitasking. Now I'll have to find the time to devote to both.

This system is very, very good--IF you're a single instrument specialist, and you have a designated position in your crew. Harmonix is aiming this at the people who are going to play one instrument in order to encourage them to explore their libraries more. That's bad news for people like me who want to play a song on all the instruments, particularly if they're not spotlight songs.

On the other hand, the old system discouraged people in crews from playing the same songs because of the XP decay.

I still believe per player/per instrument/per song would be a better equalizer, but I can see the argument that such a scoring system is biased towards crews where everybody owns every instrument (and is therefore pay to win to some degree).

I guess in the end I'll accept this scoring system isn't meant for people in my situation. I'll continue to participate when I can, but while before it would have been difficult to get Bloodstone, I guess I'll be striving for Diamond from here on out.
  • While I do understand the concept behind not allowing multiple instruments being played at the same time under one profile, I would like to see that relaxed for vocals.
I enjoy singing and playing at the same time, but it counts for nothing in Rivals.

Also I would like to have the pro drum lefty flip glitch fixed as well... HMX are totally silent on this and my best drummer...who is SHOCK HORROR!! left handed, won't play because he can't score well and isn't enjoying it
  • First off, thank you @HMXOwl for providing clear, detailed information...

Secondly, I have to agree with everyone that stated how bad the New system is. Is it better than the Old system? Mostly...

The New system favors those with the most DLC and actually penalizes those with smaller libraries...

As stated by multiple people, we need per instrument decay.

It benefits those with smaller libraries.
It benefits those that can play multiple instruments.

For instance, I enjoy playing Guitar the most, although I'm better at Bass. So with this new current system, I would need to play Bass and only Bass, ( since I can get more FCs & GS on Bass than Guitar), to maximize my XP output...

This locks people into play the instrument they are best at, not necessarily which instrument the enjoy the most...

Per instrument decay would allow people like me to play the instrument we feel like playing. I can switch between Guitar & Bass, once my plays ran out on those, try some Vox or Drums, both of which I'm not very good at, but if I ran out of Play bonuses on Guitar & Bass, I could do them and eventually get better at them without worrying I'm actually hurting my crew in the process.
  • I can understand everyone who feels slighted by this new decay system. 10% decay is SUPER HIGH! What I don't understand is anyone who feels slighted because they're being "forced" to play a certain way. Yes, you may have to change your play style, because this is A COMPETITION! Sometimes the group needs a Tank, somtimes they need a Healer. Specializing during competition is nothing new. This doesn't affect free play so, no one is being forced to do anything.

What would people think of an xp decay system of 20% every 5 plays?

So first 5 plays is 100%, next 5 plays is 80%, etc.

That way you can play each instrument once (if you like doing that) plus an extra play before a drop off, and it's more "gradual" to a point vs. the current system.

It still encourages you to play multiple songs if you want 100%, but also let's you play a song longer before "tapping it out".
  • I really liked the idea of 3 plays per instrument. If you were proficient at all instruments, that's 12 plays with bonuses and rewards those to try other instruments. I'm only proficient at 3 instruments, but 9 plays per song is more than enough for me.

The whole idea of xp decay was to punish those who were abusing the system, playing the same song over and over, right? With the current system, you really get punished after the 5th play where the song is almost useless at that point. That seems a little extreme if you like playing on different instruments. As said earlier, this rewards those specialist instrument people with large libraries and punishes literally everyone else.

4 plays at full XP then 10% reduction starting at 5th and beyond sounds reasonable to me.
  • Well they seemed to have resolved the other problem I had with the challenges in this one, there's a lot more RB4 era songs. Of course I'm not going to play Stranglehold but there's a load of other eligible RB4 era songs which is fantastic.

This is helped along by the XP banner changing to say 'Play Bonus X/3' to prevent confusion with Crew terminology.

Didn’t get any messages about XP bonuses on my first and second songs this challenge, got the old “1st crew play” message and xp bonus on the third song I played. Not in set lists. On ps4.
  • @thatmarkguy Same on XB1.

Same with me on xbox 1. Looks like the notifications are still the old way and still a song behind when in setlists.
