DLC Week of 11/01: Finger Eleven, The Shins, Stroke 9, and Jeff Williams ft. Casey Lee Williams!

It’s a week for everyone, as we’ve got DLC by Finger Eleven, The Shins, AND Stroke 9, along with the next RWBY track from our good friends over at Rooster Teeth!

Finger Eleven kicks the week off with “Paralyzer”, a well-known hit from the ‘00s. The widely recognizable guitar riff makes it a perfect song for Rock Band 4. A single off the band’s fifth album Them vs. You vs. Me, it became the band’s biggest hit and remains a staple in their live sets. Guitar is as fun as you’d expect, with HOPO strings going immediately into quick chords, so you’ve got to bring your best performance. Drums are tough, with simple beats filled with hi-hat flourishes and snare rolls that start with your off-hand. Before the guitar solo, there’s even a breakdown that asks for precision on the snare, hi-hat, and kick.

This week, The Shins’ song “Australia” joins their previously released track “New Slang” in the Rock Band library. The band’s third album, Wincing the Night Away, was critically acclaimed upon release in 2007 and was nominated for a Best Alternative Music Album Grammy the following year. A great example of dreamy indie rock, “Australia” has a pleasant sound set down by the instruments. Bass holds a nice groove, rarely playing the same note back-to-back, while guitar quickly hops between chord patterns and quick jumps around single notes. Drums are largely held down by the snare and kick, but you’ll get some great sticking practice with the fills that regularly appear.

We’ve also got “Little Black Backpack ‘09”, a  re-record of the ‘90s staple from Stroke 9. The song was a single from their major label debut Nasty Little Thoughts and would go to become one of their signature tracks. This version was specifically created for music games, which makes us feel very special. The song stays light in the verses, but really picks up in the pre-chorus and chorus, where vocal phrases are short and require precision to keep your multiplier up. Pre-chorus guitar has a HOPO-heavy line before going into big chords, and bass even has some back-and-forth HOPO action.

This extra-large week is capped with another song from RWBY! Back at RTX, it was teased that we’d be partnering up for more tracks, and “Time To Say Goodbye” is next up. Fittingly, it’s the OP to Volume 2 of RWBY, again by Jeff Williams ft. Casey Lee Williams. It's the perfect way to follow up the Rivals-exclusive “This Will Be the Day”, Volume 1’s OP. “Time To Say Goodbye” comes in with a quiet intro sung by Casey, before breaking into heavy instrumentation across the board, rapid drums, unyielding bass, and a gnarly guitar riff. Everything shines past that, with guitar solos and riffs interspersed among basslines full of movement and quick drum fills to change sections. Of course, harmonies are crisp and frequent, so it’ll be a great time for everyone. If you thought “This Will Be The Day” was a good time, you should check out this follow-up. It also comes just in time for the debut of Volume 6, available to Rooster Teeth First members this last weekend and for everyone this coming Saturday! Play the song, watch the show, have a good weekend.

Songs can be purchased individually for $1.99. The Rock Band Rivals Season 8 Spotlight Pass can be purchased for $16.49.

  • Finger Eleven - "Paralyzer"
  • The Shins - "Australia"
  • Stroke 9 - "Little Black Backpack '09" (Part of the Rock Band Rivals Season 8 Spotlight Pass)
  • Jeff Williams ft. Casey Lee Williams - "Time To Say Goodbye"

* Please note that this week’s DLC tracks will be available for purchase on Thursday, November 1st.

  • Wait, the second RWBY song isn't free for Rivals owners?

"Paralyzer" and "Australia", heck yes! I'm gonna buy those SO fast. Really hoping for the rest of the Shins tracks soon.

I don't know the last song in the Spotlight Pass, so of course it's the Spotlight song this week. (Edit: Just listened to the original, and it sounds like some classic 90's alternative, so right on! I hope the re-record isn't too bad, and like "The Touch", the "'09" isn't included in the song name in-game.)

And the RWBY track isn't really for me, so if this one is $1.99 as opposed to free like the last one, I'm gonna pass.
  • Not a fan of the Stroke 9 song... but the rest is great!

Yeeeeaaahhhh! Australia and Little Black Backpack were two of my old RBN songs I really wanted back as DLC. Australia was probably one of my most played songs back in the day.
  • Getting everything! This is an amazing week! Especially RWBY music, keep that coming!
  • SCFoxSCFox Opening Act
Picking up all the RBN re-releases this week! Great picks!
  • Happy to finally get Paralyzer. Have to see about the rest.

Ohohohoho man. God bless this week. Fittingly enough I was just listening to The Shins' "Australia" this week and was hoping we'd see it as official DLC. Glad it made it in, and here's hoping to see the rest of the Shins' RBN content down the line!

So this RWBY song isn't free, then? I kinda thought the next 2 RWBY songs would be free like the first one was, but I guess not. I'm definitely in for "Australia" and "Paralyzer" in any case. I'll have to listen to the RWBY song and see if it's worth buying.
  • Wow, amazing week! Totally into those RBN tracks, and I'll even spring for the RWBY song because the other one was so fun.
  • Awesome, will pick up Paralyzer!

Both "Australia" and "Little Black Backpack" were prime candidates for harmonies. Very sad that they aren't included, especially on the former. The Shins are one of my fave bands, so I'm glad to get more in RB4, but it's bittersweet that this song and any others we get in the future aren't fully-featured.
  • Good week and there's even a RBN song I didn't own on last gen (Little Black Backpack), the last time a RBN song I didn't own on last gen came to RB4 was Bullet With a Name at the end of season 6.

@djb5f1 Given Up by Linkin Park was also not a cover in Rock Revolution.

Nice to see a 4 Song week.

I will get Paralyzer, which I think was the only non-cover song on Konami’s short-lived Rock Revolution.

I had that game. lol Once they had you playing without seeing the notes I was done with that game. I'm happy to see this song finally come to RB.

3 out of 4 aint bad. :) I'm a terrible alt strummer so that one song is out of the question for me. I will buy those other 3 though. :)

I don't know Little Black Backpack at all. I was surprised to do the research and see it made it to a peak of #6 on the Modern Rock Tracks billboard chart (peaked the week of Feb 5, 2000). Looked at the rest of the chart that week... I knew the rest of the top 10! In fact we now have at least one song by all ten of these artists.

    All The Small Things

    Limp Bizkit

    Take A Picture

    Red Hot Chili Peppers

    The Everlasting Gaze
    The Smashing Pumpkins

    Little Black Backpack

    Falling Away From Me

    Never Let You Go
    Third Eye Blind

    Learn To Fly
    Foo Fighters

    Guerrilla Radio
    Rage Against The Machine

Looking through every other week of RBN content that we've gotten this year, this is far and away my favourite, so a big thanks to HMX for that. While I only knew 2/3 going in, I like them all. I'd like if they had harmonies, but that certainly won't keep me from scooping them up as fast as I can.
  • Positions in the RBN thread are 6 (Paralyzer), 91 (Little Black Backpack) and 103 (Australia).

I love Saint Simon, and would be thrilled if any of the Shins' past couple albums got their singles as RB DLC (Name For You, Simple Song, It's Only Life). But Australia never did it for me. All three of the RBN reissues exist in that hazy in between area where they're not outright refusals, but I didn't like any of them enough to pay $1.99CDN for last gen, do I really like them quite enough to pay $2.99 CDN (Thanks, Sony!) for now?

Backpack does look like the most interesting-to-me chart, and if my crew is to have any hope of keeping bloodstone streak alive I'll need to buy that (and hope one of our drummers wakes up this week).

Now, this is more like it... more songs and from different genres. Best selection all season!
  • Australia is my least favorite shins song. But gotta support them so I see the rest !

    Grabbing the spotlight song.

Probably skipping rwyb song because I hardly play the free one. This one doesn’t do much for me .

    Grabbing finger eleven

    We only need America now!
  • Will pick up Paralyzer.
  • Paralyzer was a song I quite liked from Band Hero that for whatever reason, I just never got around to buying in RB3. Definitely wishlisting it.

Don't know The Shins so I'll have to get back on that one.

Don't know Stroke 9 but I bought the pass so I'm getting that regardless.

And finally, I'm obviously getting Time To Say Goodbye since we could do with more classical musi--oh wait, it's just the RWBY Volume 2 theme song and not an English language version of Con te partirò? Even better, since I requested that one nearly a year ago!
  • hiimSMAPhiimSMAP Road Warrior
    I’ll be getting Australia!
  • tnevakertnevaker Road Warrior
    i'm in for the Shins

i'm glad that RWBY song isn't free, because if it was free i'd feel obligated to download it even though i don't really want it. maybe we can retroactively make the other RWBY song not free too? that way i can not own that one either.

i'll wait and see on the other two.

one question though... if i Stroke 9 with my Finger Eleven, what do i do with my two extra fingers?
  • Getting everything! This is an amazing week! Especially RWBY music, keep that coming!

There's still one remaining, right? Someone confirm so it's not eternal hype like that country song that showed up on the store one day and dissappeared forever lol

Yes, it's been confirmed we'd be getting 2 more RWBY tracks since August, so there's one more coming down the line.
