DLC Week of 1/31: Elle King and The Struts!

New DLC from Elle King and The Struts come to Rock Band 4!

Elle King’s “Shame” kicks us off this week. The debut single from her second album Shake the Spirit, ”Shame" was embraced by both fans and rock radio. The song found chart success on both Billboard Rock Airplay and Hot Rock Songs, even topping the Triple A chart. A distorted track about hanging with the wrong crowd, “Shame” is led by the bassline, which persists throughout the song. The distortion is applied to every part of the song, including Elle King’s vocals, giving it a grimy roughness fitting the subject matter. It lends a ton of fun to playing, with the unique sound giving off cool effects like a very poppy snare.
Head to https://www.elleking.com/ and you can check out the music video for “Shame” and footage from a Live at London performance. Don’t forget to pick up Shake the Spirit bundled with some merch while you’re there!

As the first single and leading track off of YOUNG&DANGEROUS, “Body Talks” kept us talking about The Struts. “Body Talks” was a topper on the Billboard Hot Rock, Mainstream Rock, and Alternative Songs charts. The success of the single helped YOUNG&DANGEROUS secure a top-20 debut on the Billboard Top Rock Albums. It’s a high energy song all around, with loud drums that rarely let up, holding together riff-heavy strings. On top of it all, there’s harmonies full of ohhing and wooing, perfect for parties.
https://thestruts.com/ will fill you in on everything to do with The Struts. They’re currently touring Australia with Greta Van Fleet, and they’re soon heading to the UK for more shows. No matter where you live, the site has your music needs covered. Stream YOUNG&DANGEROUS on your preferred service, which features “Body Talks” and their latest single “Fire (Part 1)”.

For the first two weeks of release, songs can be purchased individually for $1.49. Following that two week period, songs can be purchased individually for $1.99. The Rock Band Rivals Season 10 Spotlight Pass can be purchased for $14.99.

I don't know either song off-hand, but I don't dislike either artist, so cool I guess. Again $14.99 for the Spotlight Pass, so I'd guess we'll get a similar format to last season.
  • Sweet! The Struts are great, I would have preferred "Could Have Been Me" or "Kiss This", but this song is good

Never heard of Elle King before, will have to listen to the preview when I am home from work

We have another Elle King song, Ex’s and Oh’s. She is the daughter of comedian/actor Rob Schneider.

  • Where's the video?

The video doesn't seem to be working yet. Hope they get that fixed soon!

For once, I'm actually really excited this week! I'm a huge Elle King fan (even saw her live in 2017) and I honestly didn't think we'd be seeing any more of her in the game after "Ex's & Oh's". It was more of a fantasy pick for me than anything. That said I don't think many people here would be familiar with the song, but I'd recommend it! She's got a voice unlike many female singers nowadays.

Side note, but this brings the pile of "songs in RB that sound like The Raconteurs' Steady As She Goes" to 2, after the Joe Jackson song we got last year.
  • Body Talks seems all right, will pick that up.
  • Guess I'll grab the season pass. Would have bought both anyway.
Much better than last seasons start for sure...

Oh, I totally know "Body Talks"! Not well, but I've heard it in a commercial or two. I knew we'd get a song by the Struts eventually, so I'm happy with it being this one, sounds like it'll be fun. The Elle King song doesn't sound too bad either; not as instantly memorable as "Exes and Oh's" was, but fine enough to join my library.

I am kind of bummed that it's not the version of Body Talks with Kesha on it. She's pretty fun, I at least liked Rainbow. And it would be better for harmonies, trading off lines and occasionally overlapping, instead of Luke Spiller doing all of them. But y'know, it's still a good song, I'm happy. And it opens the door for more Struts, which would be welcome.

I agree with you; I don't dislike either artist, but I'm not excited about these offerings either.

It sounds like The Struts track at least has fun parts for the whole ROCK band...

  • "Body Talks" isn't that bad at least it has a solo.
On the other hand it's a shame we're getting "Shame" over so many good songs we could've gotten.
  • These songs seem ok, shame it wasn't a Maroon 5 Super Bowl tie-in though as it would've been a fantastic opportunity to finally get RBVR progress.

I hate to tell ya...this *is* rock these days. Mainstream rock, anyways.

I don't love it either, but it is what it is.

What will this Struts song be classified as, pop-rock? Rock? Indie rock? Alternative?

Although, fortunately the guitar sound is a little heavier than in the Ke$ha version.

Two songs that sound perfectly cromulent to my ears, but I don't feel any great need to purchase in the foreseeable future.

So far I've bought 0 songs in 2019, although that probably says more about me than the DLC. As usual though there's always next week.

Nice to see that Elle King didn't go the way of Carly Rae Jepsen. They are both talented and deserve more than to be one hit wonders. Body Talks sounds really fun and chill.

Body Talk is nice. Shame is really really good, I have to add this to my playlist. Loving this week!
  • Wow disappointed to say the least

The Struts has a good beat and tonally fit Rock Band

The new Elle King song is not as good as her first hit at least in my opinion

I'm happy to see another Elle King song! However, I am very disappointed it isn't America's Sweetheart. That song kicks some serious tush.

Edit: After first listen, Elle King is just talented isn't she?? I'm happy we're getting Shame, still stand by my wish however. ;)

The Struts song? That song is just simply on FIRE!?!? Good job Harmonix. B)

The Elle King song I always hoped to get after "Exes and Oh's" was "Under the Influence". It was her second single (after "EaO"), used to get a lot of radio play on our local station, and it was pretty soulful stuff. Wouldn't have been a huge challenge in RB, but had enough groove that I think it would have still been fun to play.

Seconding the request for more Carly Rae! Anything off of her Emotion album would be incredible

Unfortunately I’m not interested in these tracks, nothing for me

Just listened to that. I think I'm gonna have to buy her albums now. Thanks for that! :)

Well at least I know I don't need to pay for the Spotlight Pass this time. Nothing to see here--I'll move along.

This is just one week. And it's actually a good week of new music. Let's wait and see what the rest of the pass brings how about? ;)
