I think when you think about Rocksmith less as a game and more of a tool it makes more sense why they have Christmas music. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a larger amount of people out there who would like to learn "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" on guitar than people out there who want to play it on plastic instruments.

You know that would be one awesome song to play on plastic instruments though.

Rock Band Redditors have stated that the SDRE track is now dated March 28th (though I haven't checked it myself). That would mean it's coming the week after Season 10 ends. That's pretty unlikely, right? Safe to say it's part of the pass.
  • It's delayed with no date so the file could be fixed.

Christmas-themed DLC: nope! the current set of decision makers all seem to be convinced that those kinds of songs will only sell for a few weeks out of the year, and that model just doesn't work out right

It's not like this is just a theory. They've put out Christmas DLC before. They know no one buys it outside of December. They're not not just hypothesizing.

But, like, is anyone buying Three Lives after its first month out? Does Old Dominion have a recurring buying audience that buys monthly in perpetuity? I mean for a *lot* of tracks, seasonally specific or not, the sales will be primarily if not entirely the new release buyers. At least christmas songs are likely to get a second wave of buyers in their second Christmas season. There’s neither a second wave nor a steady buyership for niche releases.
At this point I'd be surprised if there was a "second wave or steady buyership" for anything, "niche" or otherwise. I don't imagine there are many people adopting the game late and dipping into the back catalogue of DLC, and most people's in-game wishlists will be the stuff they couldn't get sooner for whatever reason. For the newest DLC, I agree, it will be week 1 or never pretty much, but that's going to be true regardless of what it is.

What was wrong with the file outside of Microsoft putting it up early?

The explanation we got for why Pro Guitar upgrades stopped being offered for legacy (pre-RB3) songs was that so few people ever went back and bought songs released in the past. Even when a new reason came around to buy them.

Hard to generalize when that "new reason" was something that so few people bought. But the original point was the same: the vast majority of song sales take place right away. Maybe "right away" means "8 weeks" and that's shorter than the Christmas season used to be ... but now that you see colored lights being strung starting in Halloween ...

And I bet that many more people would buy Seasonal Music one year later [and every year] than happens with any other Rock Band DLC.

Like I said, it's a completely defensible position for HMX to say, "Never again!", but if one of the iconic / legendary Seasonal Tunes were to fall in their lap* I hope they wouldn't be too proud to rethink their stance.

*I'm pretty sure licensing agreements don't ever actually happen that way [other than with Billy Joel]

I buy old DLC all the time, some of it 10 years old.

Ok, I have bought less in the last 6 months but I attribute that to not having a functional companion App, where I would peruse what is available, build my wishlist, check my scores/stars, etc.

If I can get a functional Companion App again, I have two $50 ps4 cards ready to spend!

Edit - I am at 1300 songs now. I maybe had 400-500 in summer of ‘17. And I still have another 200 (300 if I buy the album packs of some of the songs I wanted) on my wishlist.

I'd definitely recommend the album packs. Most of the albums had songs I had never heard, or cared for (in previews) and they turned out to be my favorites.

Yes, I try to wait for a PS Store discount (20% off) on the large packs since there is never any sales on them (outside the half price for pre RB3 content that use to exist of course).

But it hard to condone buying the whole London Calling pack when I really only like the title song - and Train in Vain but that is separate. Not to say I would not like playing some of the songs if I got it.

I don’t really care for Stevie Ray Vaughan but feel I need at least Pride and Joy as part of my catalog.

Does it make sense to buy the Cars pack when I already own Just What I needed (from a track pack?).

Do I get any of the Green Day packs when I missed the window for exporting. Coming around to some of their songs but I am still not that fond of the vocals/vocal style on a lot of it.

I really like Pearl Jam’s first three (especially two) albums but very meh on Backspacer. Things like this.

I own a lot of album packs but they are from a lot of my favorites.

I'm also an exception to the rule as far as DLC goes. I got into both RB3 and RB4 late due to having to upgrade consoles, so the majority of the DLC I've ever purchased wasn't even near the release date.

Getting back to predictions... Going to lean towards a dollop of older tracks coming up for next week. Maybe even being insane and having them themed, as I think we've gotten at least one V-day pack before.

Neil Young - Heart of Gold
Blondie - Heart of Glass (RB3 rewind)
    Pet Shop Boys - Heart
  • We are not the typical Rock Band customers.

    This.

I'm not saying that people don't go into the back catalogue at all if they get the game later (I'm an example of that myself). I'm saying that we're at the point that very few new people are getting into the game, so it's only really people who already have the game and have had it for a while who buy any DLC, and for the most part, new songs either fit into the "buy immediately" or "don't buy at all" categories. It doesn't matter if it's Slayer, Maroon 5, Elle King, RWBY soundtrack stuff or whatever. For me, the wishlist is for weeks when the new content is a dud, but I've got some money I'm willing to drop on keeping the game going.

I will just state that The Cars album is the best album in Rock Band by far in my opinion. Every song on it is amazing

The rest of those albums I either never bought or I won from contests (2 of the GD albums) so I can't really recommend those

Yeah, I am going to get that one even if the value isn’t really there from owning one of the songs. Started to enjoy them more, their R&R HOF solidified it.

Back in the RB2/RB3 era, what I used to do was build a wishlist keeping note of whether the songs were in packs or not and then buying full packs and standalone songs but generally not cherry picking songs in packs. The thinking back then was essentially music exploration, my library would've been very limited back then if I only bought the songs I knew I liked.

Then around 2012, I decided to buy the rest of the songs I didn't have for completion reasons but in small batches to make up for the reduced DLC load. Of course Metallica being delisted sped up the process because with RB dead it seemed a reasonable theory at the time that all RB DLC would disappear from the stores (fortunately that didn't happen).

Broken tempo maps seems to be the reason, according to reddit, hmxdan seems to confirm it in this thread.

Wait there's a HoF for The Cars? I'm way behind. Off to watch now. Why don't we have You Might Think in Rock Band yet?

There's a perfect 3 pack just sitting there, waiting to be in RB: You Might Think, Magic, and Drive. Just sayin'...
But...I also want "Shake It Up" and "Touch and Go".

If a 3-pack is all we can get though, you named the right three.

So many of those would be great on keyboard
  • Let's have the whole album Candy O as DLC. And then they can do a 6 pack to pick up some singles from the later albums.

The only tracks that I still really want that I think have a chance of making it over are the Alien Ant Farm songs, the rest of the Shins, "St. Elmo's Fire", "Blue (Da Ba Dee)", "Great Balls of Fire", "Flightless Bird, American Mouth", "I'm Amazed", "White Knuckles", and "The Great Salt Lake". They're all recognizable songs or artists, and are within the top 300 on the top-selling RBN list.

I also really want songs like "Blow at High Dough", "You're a Wolf" and the tracks by New Pornographers, Ra Ra Riot and the Trews back, but I'm not really holding my breath for any of those. While they aren't "small" songs, or by totally unknown artists, they're all below the 300 mark, so I'd assume most of them are either unlikely to ever make it over, or at least less prioritized, unfortunately. Maybe one day.

I'm also surprised we haven't gotten any more A Day to Remember in nearly seven months.

Cutting/pasting from a thread in Your Ultimate Setlist. Every time I post a list of all the remaining RBN stuff I want, we usually get one or two of the songs I listed within a few weeks.

So I predict something from the above paragraph by the end of February.
  • The Great Salt Lake and I'm Amazed kind of go together and are by acts we've got songs in RB4, so I could see those coming.

The lead singer of Band of Horses and the lead guy behind Iron & Wine released an album together (I saw them on that tour, and they were pretty good), so throw in "FBAM" and make it a 3-song indie week!
