Day 1

Hey all, check out the link above for our 1st day shennanigans here in Austin, TX. Most of you are probably aware of what South By Southwest is, but for those who aren't, you should check it out sometime or read up on it.

We'll try to toss these daily recaps out to you guys as the week goes on, but it's going to get busier and busier, so I'm making no promises!

P.S. Something I forgot to include in the blog - we actually flew out on the same plane as Freezepop! =P Oh, and if any of you know of groups we should definitely try to see this week, let us know!

OK, so what is the event at Six you mention in your blog? Is it open to the general public or just SXSW badge holders?? Any info you can send us Austinites about any RB related events during SXSW would be much appreciated... Thanks!

    Barry J.
All of the events this week are invite-only, unfortunately. If we end up going to open venues this week (if we have time), I'll let you know!

I also saw Enslaved and 1349 are playing there.

Hopefully you guys can check at least one of them out. Maybe some DLC for RB? Please?

I gladly pay for some MMJ DLC. I just randomly caught "One Big Holiday" a few years ago on Conan O'Brien. I was pretty blown away. . . so was Conan, actually.

    The aforementioned Conan Appearance:

Hadn't heard of them until this very thread. I would count them in the "win" column for DLC.

When they come around to the north east i would love to see them
and I would love some songs of theirs in the game. You could always just make the bass chart the same as guitar

Strange Times would work for the game. And when you hear the new album Attack & Release there are a couple GREAT songs that could be included as well. I pushed marketing to try to get Strange Times in the game. We will see.

I second Hymns. Saw 'em open for Ben Kweller a year or two ago and they rocked the house (not as much as BK did, but they were pretty good).

Also, go see The Matches (and get them in the game!)

I've seen My Morning Jacket in concert and yes, they're a good band to see, although they can get a little "jammy" sometimes. But they do keep it to a minimum and if you don't mind jam bands, then they don't get much better.

    My SXSW concert recommendations:

Handsome Furs, Fri. March 14th at Bourbon Rocks Patio - not a great one for Rock Band but frontman Dan Boeckner's other group, Wolf Parade, would probably be great...he's like the Bruce Springsteen of indie rock, very passionate vocal delivery

Destroyer, Fri. March 14th at The Parish - Dan Bejar's band, he also does several songs on each of the New Pornographers' albums, you may have heard of them ;)

Okkervil River, Sat. March 15th at Stubb's - and speaking of the New Pornographers, I'll be seeing this band open for them next month...their songs "For Real" and "Black" would make great DLC (if someone could link the videos that would be cool, I'm new here)

It looks like My Brightest Diamond will be there... sounds like a good choice to me. Female singers are always a good sell when i'm trying to get my girlfriend to sing.
Also, i'd second Okkervil River. I really like to see the diversity in Rock Band and it's a great way to have lesser known artists heard.

    Quartet with Bela Fleck

    The Black Keys

Body of War with Kimya Dawson, Serj Tankian, Tom Morello, Brett Dennen, Brendan James, RX Bandits, Ben Harper, Billy Bragg, and Special Guests

    Del The Funky Homosapien

Of the few that interest me.

Sadly, no The Faint, Mindless Self Indulgence or any of their Ilk.

    *Edit*
    Junkie XL
    Moby
The Presidents of The United States of America
    Shout Out Louds
    The Stills
    Saul Williams

    These all stood out.

My Morning Jacket IS NOT A JAM BAND!!!

Ask any of the hardcore MMJ fans and NONE of them will describe MMJ as a jam band. That's a lazy person's label for their music. If you actually listen to what people consider a "jam," then you will realize it is a structured part of the song and is ALWAYS played the same from show to show.

another PERFECT My Morning Jacket song for RB would be "Run Thru"....

check it out on You Tube (i would embed the video if i knew how).

the crazy middle section would be amazingly fun on drums and guitar.

and if any can sing as high as Jim James' falsetto then you sir are a master!

Bands you should try and check out (maybe they will inspire some DLC):
    Junior Brown
    Del the Funky Homosapien
    The Donnas
Talib Kweli (Mos Def and him are the best rappers out there)
    Lucero
    The Mothertruckers
    North Mississippi All-Stars
This Bike is a Pipe Bomb
    Was (not Was)
    Bobby Whitlock

sorry I know the list is a bit long, but they are bands you may never have seen.....if you haven't seen them, you should try checking them out.....all fantastic

I don't know if I'd consider myself to be a "hardcore" MMJ fan, but I do own copies of "It Still Moves" and "Z" and have seen them in concert obviously so give me a little credit here. I'll just re-phrase the whole thing:

When I saw MMJ in concert they extended the instrumental sections on a few songs to the point where I got a little bored. And to make it more annoying, there were a couple frat guys/DMB fans standing next to me who were high-fiving each other throughout these song portions.

I do like the band though, they have some great songs, and both albums I own are really good, this is just an issue of my personal taste.

Oh, and since you like them, I recommend checking out Band of Horses as well if you haven't already. They've got some similar qualities.

Oh crap, somehow I didn't see Spoon in the band listing my first time around, maybe they were added late or something. Anyway, make sure you see them tonight (Thursday, the 13th) 8:00 at Auditorium Shores Stage. They're pretty much the greatest rock band in existence...their last 5 albums are all classics.

As a Texan and an Indie rock fan, I have to second Spoon.

Of course, they've made quite the name for themselves via the Stranger than Fiction soundtrack, so it's not as hard to find people outside of Texas who know about them these days.

I am also a huge fan of a band called Calhoun. The guys are from Ft. Worth and their lead man Tim Locke is the former front man for the Grand Street Criers as well as the backup vocalist/guitarist for Flickerstick.

Calhoun plays March 15th: 8:00 p.m. Creekside EMC at Hilton Garden Inn

Some of you will blast them as too poppy if you check out their stuff on myspace, but I promise you, some of their tunes get pretty revved up.
